  1. General DISH™ Discussion
I paid the ETF because I finally convinced my wife to cut the cord. Maybe smash the dish is more appropriate. Everything I watch is available either for free or for way less Dish (or any other provider) would charge me for.
  2. General DISH™ Discussion
Today I called Dish to cancel service. I thought that since today is the first day in my billing cycle it would have made things easier: no additional billing for service and exactly 9 month of ETF to pay. Not so fast. I found out that I still had 9 months and 2 days remaining in my commitment...

The estimated time to transfer recording to EHD is way off (longer than actual). It was much more accurate in the previous version of the FW.
  4. Hopper System Support Forum
With this version recordings moved to EHD have the thumbnail but when the recording is moved it has the protect icon on it and correct recording date; next day the icon is gone and the recording date goes to 2006. In setting there is a new option to turn off some interactive function while the...

Wish I would know. That would be a first step toward more transparent bills. Probably it is neither Dish nor content providers interest to divulge that information. If we don't know they can blame each other for the rising bills.

Comparing the $8 Netflix charges with the cable/sat bill is not correct. You pay Netflix for the content but pay cable/sat for content+delivery. The real cost of Netflix is $8+$30-40 for the broadband connection you need to use the service.
  7. General DISH™ Discussion
Streaming is the technology used to deliver content. A-la-carte is a method to pay for the content. So, no, they are not the same. If Netflix has exclusive content from, say, CBS, to access that content I have to subscribe to Netflix service. It is no different than subscribing to a given...

Advertisers might pay the bill but the money comes from our pocket. The cost of tv is embedded in any product you buy no matter if you watch cable/broadcast tv or not, watch ads or not, or have cut the cord. Personally I believe in prices being transparent so I much rather pay for a show I...

Probably the black-out was caused by the Sprint fiber cut that took down cellphone and data service this morning in Washington, Oregon and Minnesota.
  10. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
Got 5d2 on my HR20 yesterday and today at about 1:15pm the rebooted for no obvious reason. The resolution bug is fixed. Receiver is slow to respond to the remote and key-press are missed way too often.
  11. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
Probably for the same reason they didn't stop the previous flawed releases: because they have no clue of what they are doing.
  12. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
I don't know who told you that but you have a better chance to win the lottery than getting that update. They have known about the resolution bug for a while and sent out 3 software updates without fixing it.
  13. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
I see the same problem on my HR20-700. It happened after browsing OnDemand but I don't know if it is just a coincidence.
  14. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
It is not. Might be making the receivers faster (too soon to say) but introduces other bugs. In my opinion it is just another wide testing release.
  15. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
My guess is that Directv got the message that their FW development process is in trouble and now they are trying to clean up the mess and do some slow release to get feedback. I got 5c8 on 4/25, never got 5cb, and got 5cd last night. With 5c8 and 5cd the speed is improved but they introduced...
  16. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
HR20-700 Resolution bug still present. Turning on the receiver the output is 720p even if 720p is not a resolution selected in the settings.
  17. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
I had the same problem with 59E just before the new FW was downloaded.
  18. DIRECTV General Discussion
WOW indeed. Pity that you aren't able to point out any of this contrarian views. Maybe because there is none.
  19. DIRECTV General Discussion
I sure know how to get an HR24 and it might solve my problem. But if Directv business methods do not change, there is no way to say that in six month I am at the same point. New FW, new functionality and a slow receiver. What is coming out from this discussion seem to me a critique of Directv...
  20. DIRECTV General Discussion
Feel free to ask that question to Directv. My old HR20-700 was 5 weeks older than the replacement they sent me.
