Take the DVR with you to the next house, if you end up moving?

The only way you are are going to know how good the Dish Network LNBs are is to -Get Dish Network to tell you their purchase spec for the LNBs that they buy (very unlikely) -Measure lots of them to find out the limits -Measure your own Unfortunately getting a piece of test equipment to measure...

Every time I go to channel 100, the box locks up & needs to be rebooted. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

For long-range reception, a low noise-figure preamplifier mounted close to the antenna (i.e. within a few feet) is always a good idea. What you want to do is overcome the loss in the cable from the antenna to the TV (which can be significant, especially for UHF), and perhaps have better noise...

James is assuming that the bit rate for your local HD channel stays the same. At first glance, this is a reasonable assumption when a channel is added to another transponder. However the network provider (Dish Network in this case) may have a reason to do something else. They may reallocate...

Does anyone have the 3-digit remote control code for the Toshiba D-R4 DVD recorder? I've tried doing a scan, but after pushing the remote button for over 1000 times, I can't find anything. Has anyone made this work?

It appears that if you have a 6.2 Remote with the 721, that there is no way to "minimize" a PIP window (i.e. like using the Red button on the Platinum Remote). This was a nice feature that allowed seeing more of the screen (albeit with a small TV icon) while buffering 2 programs. Am I missing...

I belive there are 2 reasons for the DPP44. One is a LongDukDong says--if you have 4 satellites. The other is if you need to use a dual-tuner receiver with only one coax line. If you get rid of the 301, you will have 5 tuners (4 receivers, one with a dual tuner). This could be supported...

It appears this is no longer on the RS Web Site--my, that was fast!
  10. Local Reception
You can't say "at 60 miles it works, at 70 miles it doesn't". There are just too many variables. A person with a degree in RF engineering (actually this would be more Communications Engineering, which is a different sub-specialty) would build what's called a "Link Budget". It would look...

What if the channel resides on two satellites? For example, if you have both 129 (for VOOM) and 148 (for CBS HD from LA), the San Francisco locals are on both satellites. Do you end up getting multiple listings of the same channels?

Not quite--you do have to get a dual-tuner DVR to record one program and watch another live program. But with a single-tuner DVR, you can record one program while watching another recorded program.

Oh, one other thing--it also appears that the frame advance & skip back now is a longer interval. I haven't carefully characterized this, but it seems to be an entire group of pictures, instead of one frame.

I've noticed several things in L177: -The skip foward now seems to be about 40 seconds, and the skip back is about 10 seconds (instead of ~32 & 8) -The above mentioned TV Guide logo -If channel 101 is locked, you can no longer get to it just by pushing the Dish Home button on the remote (you...

I really like my 721, but I wouldn't say that it was "unconditional". I really don't like it when software updates cause signficant new bugs, like the latest update causing problems with skipping back. So I don't fit into any of the above categories--I'm somewhere between the top 2.

A way to be sure to get rid of the DC is to break the DC path. Any kind of high-pass filter should do this. A simple trick for this (and for breaking ground loops) is to use 2 baluns (75 ohm to 300 ohm converters) back-to-back. One converts teh 75 ohm line to 300 ohms, then the 2nd balun...

Regarding the problem of getting a B/W signal when playing camcorder tapes through the 721 front panel inputs--I've seen something similar when I play a DVD through the front panel inputs. If I switch to channel 0 before turning on the DVD player, then I get this problem. If I turn the DVD...

One small problem with moving all the locals to the wing birds--there are no spot beam antennas there. You can't just move the main birds, that would interrupt programming. I also suspect that the "look angle" to the continental US would make a spot beam antenna design very difficult.

Perhaps the installer meant that the installation process might damage the cable--that is the installer might have to cut the cable to connect it to the satellite. Perhaps I'm being naive, but this is a perfectly reasonable interpretation of "the potential exists to to damage the cable"

I had similar symptoms on my 721 about a month before tuner 1 completely died.
