  1. General DISH™ Discussion
If I recall correctly, the oldest bandwidth overlapped and potentially would interfere with DBS. It was intended for point to point services (not mobile) with the base antenna pointing south to avoid interference with DBS that generally transmits from the south. DISH planned on using it as an...
  2. General DISH™ Discussion
Voom had use of 13 transponders at 61.5 (they used the two unassigned STA transponders). While they were able to launch a service they failed - partially due to their only satellite position being so far east and partially due to their lack of content. They were fortunate enough to launch at a...
  3. DIRECTV General Discussion
It is interesting that DIRECTV chose the rate that DISH charges for locals. I agree that the cost is not an exact pass through. Considering how much the local cable companies charge for local channel fees it could be higher. In the old days DISH charged $5 for locals and DIRECTV charged $3 if...
  4. General DISH™ Discussion
Are they falling behind due to lack of bandwidth or lack of construction?
  5. General DISH™ Discussion
"Their world" is a good way of putting it. Outside of the world of people who do buy and sell amongst themselves with gold and silver bills and coins, a gold coin isn't going to be of much value. One would spend more time convincing a person "outside their world" they are giving the coin to that...

Unless DISH wants to move to a version of MPEG-4 that the ViP series will not support. Let em run until they die, if they die replace them with Hooper w/Sling or another modern receiver. There is no reason to waste time or money repairing receivers that DISH does not want to deploy.

You should go back further ... include the 4 million subscribers lost in 2019, 3.4 million lost in 2020, 4 million lost in 2021 and 22 and 1.8 million lost in 2023. Five years with an average loss off 659.7k per quarter. Remaining ignorant of the fact that 3.4 million is less than 4 million. 2...
  8. DIRECTV General Discussion
500k is not the low mark for DIRECTV subscriber losses. There was a 1.8 million net subscriber loss in 2023. Averages as 450k per quarter. But 500k plus per quarter fits the narrative better.
  9. General DISH™ Discussion
Bankruptcy would be reorganization, not liquidation. DISH Pay TV will survive in some form.
  10. Internet Streaming Services
The assumption is everyone has a gold plated ISP with plenty of bandwidth and low latency, perfect for streaming. And would buy such a service whether or not they streamed. :) I believe it is fair to list an incremental cost, if one is paying more for streaming friendly service than they would...
  11. DIRECTV General Discussion
DISH's problems are not satellite or Pay TV related. They are doing fine in that area, making billions of dollars in profit each year. It has been several years since their Pay TV profits dipped below the $1 billion per year mark. Net subscriber losses were just over 1 million subscribers in...

AT&T will pay YOU. :) Actually with the debt load, that isn't too far off.
  13. DIRECTV General Discussion
AT&T now values their investment in DIRECTV at $877 million. The initial value was $ 6.852 billion when the sale to TPG closed.
  14. DIRECTV General Discussion
DISH reports their numbers. DISH added around a half million "new" subscribers in 2023. They lost more than they gained, but there are obviously people signing up for the service as new / returning subscribers. I suspect the same applies to DIRECTV. Just no reported count.
  15. Hopper System Support Forum
DISH upgraded my LNB to a DPH and I had two Hopper 2000s. The transition for me occurred when 77 was removed from the Eastern Arc. Got a call from DISH offering a new free dish and took the offer, no commitment.
  16. General DISH™ Discussion
You are mixing numbers, ignoring the valid fact that was posted regarding the PROFIT that DISH's Pay TV continues to make. DISH has a million less Pay TV subscribers than they did at the end of 2022. One would hope that means they have less revenue from Pay TV subscribers. If they had more...

The DVR copy menus appear when an external hard drive is connected. Or at least they should. It has been a while since I had a 622. I agree that a Wally would be a more equal replacement for the 211K. Not sure about the receiver limits or other details.
  18. General DISH™ Discussion
The wireless side is killing DISH Network. DISH PAY TV is doing ok, making $2.6 billion in profit over the past year. Even with the operating losses attributed to the 5G efforts, they posted an over $2.2 billion in profit. They had $1.771 billion in "other expenses".
  19. Internet Streaming Services
Churn does not mean subscriber loss or gain. Churn is subscriber turnover ... lose a million gain a million, doesn't show up in the net numbers but if that million is a high percentage of your subscribers it can be a problem. Even in the good old days of million subscriber gains the MVPDs had to...
  20. DIRECTV General Discussion
Everything fails. I suppose one day some critter is going to chew through the buried fiber leading to my house. Or there will be a power failure in one of the links between that fiber and the Internet. I lost cable Internet for more than a week because of a power failure blocks away. Arial cable...
