  1. DIRECTV General Discussion
Hey gang, One huge thing to remember is that ARPU is not just fees. DIRECTV (ok, all providers) make a significant amount of money from ad sales, ads that DIRECTV is allowed to insert into programming. Cheers, Tom
  2. DIRECTV General Discussion
I would expect pin 6 is used by composite video. (Using the same ground as the audio channels.) Peace, Tom
  3. TV Show Talk
Excellent points. My fear for John Oliver is that his show might end up having only one tone. Jon Stewart's shows could take on several tones, even within an episode. The episodes of The Nightly Show I watched all seemed to have the same tone, which I tired of rather quickly. And yes, I...
  4. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
Yeah, I do see the huge potential gain for the industry overall. A couple of the execs leaving Google have announced they are sticking with self-driving vehicles in their new startup. I should have more clearly limited my concerns to the Google aspects, as the overall industry is still exciting...
  5. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
This doesn't sound good, Chris Urmson (and 2 others) are leaving Google: http://www.recode.net/2016/8/5/12388496/tech-lead-of-google-s-self-driving-car-project-is-leaving It could as simple as the transition from R&D project to actual building cars is too big a culture shift; perhaps not bad...
  6. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
True, though I understand AP shuts itself down. :) Peace, Tom
  7. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
How about this for a comparison: https://forums.tesla.com/forum/forums/autopilot-safety-and-epidemiological-studies We need well formed data, not cherry picked marketeer data. And then the data needs to be compared correctly against the proper cohorts. 130 million highway miles, in perfect good...
  8. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
When was the last time cruise control alerted you to take over? :) Peace, Tom
  9. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
"Choosing to not pay attention?" How about falling asleep. That isn't choosing, that is natural. :) The proactive is to pay attention. The passive is to stop paying attention. That is the difference between driving a corvette (active) vs. letting the corvette sit (passive.) Peace, Tom
  10. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
There is another difference here. Driving isn't natural but the car is engineered to within human capacities. The seat can be set so your arms reach the steering wheel. The mechanics are arranged so a normal person using normal strength can turn the wheel. What I am saying is the safety of AP...
  11. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
Your logic is backward. Driving recklessly with a Corvette's power is a pro-active process. You are controlling the action to abuse the rules. AP is a passive condition. You can activate it and go to sleep. There is no need for conscious, active decision to drive recklessly by using AP. Peace, Tom
  12. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
Of course cars can adjust to the driver. That is called adapting to the human capabilities for reach, height, etc. And is an example in a discussion. Likewise, I don't see how you think people who are already distracted by phones, movies, etc. are going to be attentive when they don't even have...
  13. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
There is a big, big difference between comfort and safety. My wife might be able to drive a car set for my son. But she can't do it safely. She would be sliding down in the seat to reach the controls. Each of us has a level of ability when it comes to paying attention. It is not an all or...
  14. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
TIn Lizzie's couldn't do 100 mph until they put in some basic safety features... :) Besides, if you include me in that list of "today's mentalities", I think my overall posts, typically highly in favor of a well developed autonomous car speak for themselves. Peace, Tom
  15. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
Nope. That is not at all what I'm saying. (Nor is it "the folly of a few", unless you count Tesla as the few.) Clearly I haven't explained my position to where you understand it. Driving today, flying, bicycles, etc. are all examples of technologies that adapted themselves to human...
  16. DIRECTV SD DVR/Receiver Discussion
Steps to copy the files: 1) Learn Linux 2) Read and understand the threads on copying hard drives 3) Learn advanced Linux file systems To use the files in any meaningful way: 1) All the steps above 2) Learn doctorate level file decryption (and likely grad level encryption) 3) Break the...
  17. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
So your whole argument is the source is to be questioned? Ok, let's go to the horse's mouth itself: http://www.streetinsider.com/Corporate+News/Mobileye+(MBLY)+Issues+Statement+on+Fatal+Tesla+(TSLA)+Model+S+Autopilot+Crash/11793789.html The manufacturer of the sensor makes it clear--that...
  18. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
Your logic is backward. You might have better traction with a very few people get harmed because they wore seatbelts... Yet even so, the question is really about human nature. AP relies on humans doing something beyond their normal capability. Such a feature would normally be disabled in any...
  19. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
Exactly. The feature relies on human capabilities that are not natural for many to most people--staying as attentive with AP driving as they would if they were driving. Peace, Tom
  20. Tech Talk - Gadgets, Gizmos and Technology
"lowest common demoninator?" Are you trying to claim "most people" could pay attention while not having to do any of the driving? For safety sake, how high of a percentage of people would you expect in the basis of a feature that is in beta test? Especially considering we're talking about human...
