  1. DIRECTV Installation/MDU Discussion
Ther ya go! With a cable "plant" the system branches out and routing is easier, not exactly pole to pole. But there is a sense of various sections where the tech can efficiently go. The "route" is composed that way...one would hope. Driving 2.5 miles without compensation is not in my...

You could be right, All those things were promised........so they are in place? I still see the same rates so I haven't been tempted to give it another try. I did get news that two of the crooks who owe me money have died...without paying anyone. Things change, maybe improve. Joe

I have seen that too, I guess the reason it doesn't work is that with cable you can go from pole to pole along the "route" until you run out of poles. With Directv there is no "route." You start the day either at home with a faxed pile of work orders and start for the first scheduled job..or...

I thought it could be something like that, As long as it is a routing aid. That is different from anything that effects compensation. With every office I worked in I had to bring up the same questions:......Do you own a map? This route has six hours of driving built into...

24218, About that estimated job time? Who does the estimate and what does it mean? Contractors say...too far...it is now dark...out of service. Employees announce how long it took after it is done. Joe

Try shaking all cables one at a time to look for a loose connection. Try to duplicate the defect...start around the dish...then the entry point...then the back of each receiver.....any multiswitch or splitter. Could just be something loose or an uncompressed fitting. Joe

Yup, I have a customer who insisted I use a mast location very close to a tree instead of the clear shot that could be seen from the street. As the tree grew she started calling to get me to move the dish. Relocate dish = $100.00. I don't even answer the phone. She calls every time it rains. Joe

Yup, PLUS...after a few times working for this one company I found myself getting the same......"damn, you are as bad as the other guy they sent yesterday...why can't they send someone who knows what they are doing...? You are in a dark deep forest with NO chance for a LOS. The company sent a...

Got ya!, But it is worse than he thinks. I discovered that even recent examples are not interchangeable among themselves. I used to draw equipment and take all the dish hardware out of the boxes, stowing dishes, arms, heads and LNBs in my truck. From time to time slightly different dish models...

Maybe, I think Sony dropped out of the hardware deal early. I remember their IRDs were crap. Recent 18" dishes are not like the pic. There are probably thousands of them still out there in rust land. Joe

Now that is where I would be interested. I usually just drill the first floor wall from the outside or crawl space / basement. If one of those things would work through insulation I would look again....how about fire estopment? Joe

That pic does not look like any Directv 18" dish I have ever seen / used! The square tube vertical shaft is not familiar....could have made a new / cheaper change since I withdrew my services.....but what you show does not seem to be a part of the Directv rig pile. Regarding the screws...not...

ABOUT THAT TRIPOD! Those things are bad news in the long run. Wind will knock them over and unless you both heavily weight them and protect them from sinking into wet soil you will need to learn to tune your dish. The tripod is a tailgate party favor. Consider what is called a non penetrating...

R U doin cavity work for the F word? Magnet tools are ok but you have to charge enough to cut the wall, pull the cable & put it back if you screw up. Magnapull = drain chain & magnet? Joe AFTERTHOUGHT = They are an ok tool to have in the truck. Did look at the site JD listed and they...

I always mention this to folks who are moving. Verify you have a line of sight where you are going. DO NOT schedule the installation for the same day you move in........If at all possible take your receivers & TVs to the new house and position them for the installer before the move. DO have...

Could you please expand all that. I know in Directv land the thing on the end of the arm....the thing that appears on work orders and training materials is an LNB. I know there are other styles used for other systems but Low Noise Block down converter (LNB) is as far as I got in school...

To add to what others have stated further on.......the original satellite in the 101 w log position (Clarke belt 23,000 mi out) is the oldest position with most of the SD channels. For a period satellites in the 110 & 119 positions were used. There was a Phase II and then a Phase III dish to...
  18. DIRECTV General Discussion
+ It is still possible to select the III Phase ...3LNB that only "sees" the 101, 110 & 119. Techs who should know better still set up customers with the old "Para Todos" dish. Joe

Positioning five sats so they can be used from a single small dish...THAT is rocket science! Why go back? Joe
  20. DIRECTV Installation/MDU Discussion
"No Call No Show" is a big deal in the installation trade. Having been there and never done that I have found people will deal with, "sir I have six jobs in front of yours and I will probably arrive at your home after dark." They consider their day and often pick another day.....no problem. But...
