The problem with the batteries is not that they can't be charged, it is that they will heat up if DIScharged. They have been operating the satellite on solar power only. The danger is that when the satellite moves into earth's shadow next month they MUST use the batteries to maintain command...

TiVo Bolts use 2.5" hard drives (i.e. laptop size) and so max out currently at 4TB. To go larger requires case modification and running a SATA cable out to an external enclosure. TiVo's policy on drive replacements has always been that it voids the warranty. However, until recently, they have...

Yes..I was referring only to the configuration. We have had nearly zero issues with our Roamios and Minis, once I identified and replaced a bad coax run (it was causing innumerable MOCA errors, not just on the device connected to it, and it took quite a while to isolate). Other than that...

Ditto everything Sixto said. :). We don't have a need for Sunday Ticket (the only football fan in the house is a Jets fan).

Hi Rich...things are fine here (generator and family wise). The generator ran our house for a couple of hours last fall when a transformer failed on our block. I hope things are well for you and yours too.

As noted in my signature, we have 2 TiVo Roamio Pros (total of 12 tuners and 6TB of disk) and 5 Minis, for a total of 7 TVs (one of which is remote and connected to its Mini via a Slingbox). All the equipment is owned. The only thing I lease are two cablecards ($5.99 each per month).

If you go back and look at the original thread, I did a breakdown of the costs. I currently pay Verizon $159/month for their top tier programming package (same as DirecTV Premiere level) 75/75 Internet and phone. That will rise to $164/month June 7 unless they throw more discounts at me closer...

Comcast is one of the most TiVo friendly cable systems, but actual service quality varies a lot depending on location. On the good side, they have a dedicated cable card team (which is tantamount to a TiVo team) to work out authentication and authorization issues, and they provide an app for...

Almost two years ago I posted that we were switching to FiOS with TiVo DVRs after 12 years with DirecTV. That thread can be found here: http://www.dbstalk.com/topic/212382-long-time-directv-customer-moving-to-fios-and-tivo/page-1 I thought I would come back and let you guys know how the last...

Just stopped by to say hi! Thanks for the kind words about my posts. :)

Read some of the court cases filed against Uber by various states, cities and the Department of Labor...the term "contractor" is being redefined. The government is taking the position that if you control how a "contractor" gets business, how they service that business, and what the standards of...

  14. DIRECTV General Discussion
All of the conditions, including this one (which is rendered nearly moot by the new Net Neutrality push), are effectively toothless. For example, ATT doesn't impose caps on Uverse and DSL accounts are being tossed overboard at a frantic rate (like most ILECs), so "non-competitive use of caps"...

Exactly...while that doesn't overload the SATA bus, when combined with all the various checks and updates a DVR is doing almost constantly, it can be quite a load on the I/O subsystem. Tivo takes the approach of off-loading a lot of the guide data processing to a server, while DirecTV does it...

Database functionality is not likely to be an issue. For one thing, given the relatively small amount of data the database actually needs to hold, something as simple as an ISAM database would work just fine. Given the several good performing public domain SQL database engines out there...

Doesn't "require" it, but each time they rotate the satellite (which is usually done with the momentum wheels) the thrusters point in a different direction, which means the station keeping delta-V has to be recalculated. That can certainly be done, but it slows things down, since they would...

Typically, solar panels are deployed immediately after separation from the booster and/or mating ring.
