1080p and unsolicited VOD

My Sony SXRD supports 1080p but will not talk to the HR20 in 1080p mode. Consequently my HR20 settings do not show 1080p as a supported format. However all the unsolicited HD VOD's that the DVR downloads are 1080p, so I cannot watch them. I would expect the sofware to only select 1080i movies for the unsolicited downloads; since it does not, that feature is useless to me.

Is there a way to force the DVR to only select 1080i for its unsolicited VOD downloads?

Even though the 1080p format is downloaded, the DVR will convert it to 1080i for those displays that cannot view 1080p. You should be able to view them with no problem.

IIRC there are some Sony's that while they are 1080p they don't support 1080p/24 which is what DirecTV uses.

That said, have you actually just tried to play any of those 1080p VOD's? The HR20 should just convert the 1080p to 1080i that your TV and HR20 can communicate at.

I assume that you are using HDMI, right?

Are you using an AV receiver to pass through the HDMI?

    Try a different HDMI cable.

When I try to purchase the download, the software doesn't let me. It says the format is unsupported by my TV.

Yes, I assume it's the frame rate difference that causes the problem as discussed elsewhere here.

Yes I tried to play it, and as mentioned in my prior reply, it would not allow that.

    I have Native mode Off.

What DoD is it, I'll try it on one of my TV's that doesn't do 1080p?

Any chance you're trying this on a 3D movie (not just 1080p)? I know DIRECTV won't let you purchase a 3D program if they can't detect you have a 3D TV.

Have you made sure that the 1080p resolution is NOT checked?

Thanks for the kind offer. It was a few weeks ago. I think it was the uncut Robin Hood.

What happens if you go to channel 1100, select "What's On Now?" and try to play any of the 1080p movies with the green circle and the check mark, those are the ones pushed to your harddrive. Does it allow you to play the 5 minute free preview?

Oh, he's got a problem. I just tried your suggestion on one of my 720p sets and it played the 1080p Iron Man preview.

The problem has resolved itself, the 1080p videos now play in 1080i.

The only related thing I did since first seeing the problem 2 weeks ago was go into the Settings and attempt to enable 1080p format (this causes a test handshake to occur between DVR and TV, which of course fails after a timeout). Perhaps the DVR previously thought 1080p was supported by my TV even though there was no check mark shown against 1080p.

    I appreciate the help.
