    1. No. DirecTV won't let you activate a Receiver that's leased to someone else. Why would you want to?

    2. See the DirecTV2PC threads in the "Extras" subforum here. Need to know more about your PC and operating system version.

First of all, :welcome_s to DBSTalk!

No. When a subscriber deactivates a leased receiver, it must be returned to D*. There have been some reports here of a few rare exceptions, such as when roommates or divorced couples split up, but never when you buy one.

If your system fails the HDCP tests, there is no way around that other than to replace the hardware that is not complaint with hardware that is compliant. I agree that it's ridiculous, but it's what the entertainment industry demands.

"why not" is because it's leased, not owned. DirecTV owns it.

Do not talk to a regular CSR about this. You need to talk to the Access Card Team. While you can purchase a receiver via ebay or Craigslist or get one from a friend, DirecTV will not let you activate it if it is leased. The reason being is that the previous owner is requred to send it back when they deactivated it.

Get the Receiver ID and contact the Access Card Team at DirecTV. Give them the receiver ID and they can tell you if the receiver is owned vs. leased, is currently deactivated, and also if there is any outstanding balance on it. If it is owned, you can order a new Access Card for it. I would not purchase the receiver until I knew from the ACT that the receiver was owned and is free and clear.

I called back for the third time
    1 time they said yes
    2 time they said yes
3 time they said no and she seemed to know
So my guess is it can be done it all depends on what person you get one that doens't know and does it for you or someone knows what the rules are
    this is crazy LOL
She did say if I find one that is owned I can but I am going to guess they are very very hard to fine.............

That is the key, finding someone who is selling an OWNED unit. There are some out there, but they are few and far between. The only way to find out is to get the Receive ID (RID) number then call and confirm it's status and the account status it is coming from (if the account is not current - i.e., behind in payment, even though the receiver is owned you may not be able to get it activated).

Your best bet is just to get a unit from DirecTV, or a new one from a third party vendor such as Solid Signal or Value Electronics or Best Buy or Costco. But any of those would be leased units and you would have to pay the normal up-front cost ($199 for an HD DVR).
