As we approach opening day (tomorrow), and with today's flood of pre-show press releases....we're finding more and more neat stuff we'll have to see at CES 2010....glad we're going.

The list of "must visit" booths/exhibits/people has grown significantly the past 2 weeks. :)

I have been watching my RSS feeds like a hawk and there has been a lot of neat preshow stuff. Hoping for a good year with some actual products unlike the last few years that have been slow IMO and lots of stuff that has not seen the light of day *cough* Dish/Sling *cough* :p

I am so excited to get to go this year! I am going to setup a route on my Palm Pre and snap photos and interview a few folks, things like that. I'm most excited about RVU Alliance and what that might show us. :D

What is already evident, even before I set foot on the hallowed floors at CES 2010 this weekend...is that 3D is the "thing of the year".

3D projectors, 3D HDTVs, 3D Blu Ray players, etc....

Last year, there were about 6-7 vendors presenting/displaying their 3D wares...this year....it is about 10 times as many.

So like it or not, believe it or not....3D is a strong tech item planned for the future, and its likely to be here in some form for some time to come.

Disney has invested hundreds of millions in anticipation of releasing 3D Blu ray movies. Texas Intruments has invested many millions in the development of a new 3D projection chip that eliminates the need for special glasses.

Other manufacturers are also banking on 3D with significant investiment.

I plan to roam the floor, visit the booths, see the demos, and ask alot of questions on a number of topics myself while at CES 2010 this weekend. It will be almost impossible to avoid the reality that 3D is the hot topic of the year at this show.

In any case...that technology's challenges to become the "next big thing" in the market are:

    1) Affordable cost
    2) Backward or easily compatible with most current HDTV displays
    3) Preferably delivered without the need for any "special glasses"
    4) Solid content to use the technology

While the technology is likely NOT to go away, the number of players dabbling in it, and some approaches that don't meet those 4 criteria will likely go away over the next year or two.

A couple more days, and it will time to see things firsthand like last year - various reports and photos are on the agenda. ;)

    Stay tuned.

My camera can handle up to about 1860 high quality digital images with its current SD card inside...so I'm not concerned about running low...:D

Last year, a number of things were "very carefully guarded", so you couldn't touch the items....let alone turn then around to photograph back panels, etc.

Of course that didn't stop some people....
