Say I tune into a show that has been in progress for several minutes. I watch it for 10 minutes and then decide I would like to record it. I know I cant record the part before I tuned it in. But why couldn't I record the 10 minutes I watched along with the rest of it? Isn't it in the buffer just as the entire show would be if I had watched from the start and decided to record all of it?

You can do one of the followings:
    1) Rewind back to the begining of the buffer or begining of the show you want to record and press record and then OK to record the remainder of the event and the recording will start from where you are currently viewing.
    2) Without rewinding to the begining of the buffer, press record, select Options, and Record Entire Event.

I believe (at least on my DVR) the "Record Entire Event" selection is grayed out, unless the beginning of the show is also in the buffer. Choice one above, rewind;record is the more sure way of doing what you want every time.
