I am constantly getting a 771 error and having to reboot my dvr on a nightly basis.

What do I need to do to fix this? Directv wants to charge me for someone to come fix this and I feel they should do it for free since it is not user error.

    Any advice?

Do you have other HD Receivers or DVRs? Do they have the same problem?

Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable). You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples. A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

Go to Menu/Setup/Sys Setup and look at the SAT menu to view signal strength.

You should be in the high 80s or 90s on the 99(c), 101 and 103 (c) sats for most transponders for tuners 1 and 2. If not, you have a cable, multiswitch or dish alignment issue.

If you have another box in the home check out those settings. If the DVR is low vs the other box, then its most likely a cable problem to the DVR only.

    Good luck

I kept getting 771 error on sat 99c channels. This would happen when the sun blazed on the dish. It would be fine when the sun went down. I tested it by spraying water on the lnb's to see if the signal would come back. sure enough, i would get the signal back. I just installed a new lnb assembly for my slimline 5LNB. I am hopeful this will solve my problems. I'm hoping you figure out your problem.

I am having a similar issue. I have 5lnb dish and a multiswitch. I have 4 receivers and am only experiencing 771 on one of the receivers - an HD rcvr - no DVR. After a reset I get a solid signal and can view all chanels. I don't know the exacxt signal strength for each transponder but most are in the 90's. After a few minutes - varies from 5-30 minutes - I get 771 on all chanels and 0 signal on all transponders. I have a service call setup but I really don't want a tech messing with my stuff unless I really need them to.

Here is what I have already tried:

    - changed cables
    - moved to a different port on the multiswitch
    - hooked the rcvr directly to my projector to rule out my HT rcvr
    - switched from HDMI to component cable to rule out an HDMI issue

Have you changed the BBC, if it has one?

I have not replaced the BBC. I will try this and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

I did the same thing has hunter65. Early morning signals on 99c are all in the low 90's. in the heat of the day they drop into low 70's or go 0. I sprayed water on LNB and they went back into the 90's. When the sun goes down they stay in the 90's all night.

    Hi Litzdog.

I'm just south of you in Shoreline and I have an HR20-100 and no multiswitch. For the past week I've been getting signal breakup on several MPEG4 channels along with the occasional 771 message. The signal test shows 99c and 103c on *both* tuners as VERY low.

Went up on the roof today and the cables are nice and snug up to the receiver and the dish is taut. Any suggestions on improving the signal before making the $49 service call? :(

I don't mind getting out the wrench and "bumping" the dish ever so slightly. But I'm afraid I might lose everything if I'm not careful. The previous installer (2 years ago) actually ran a second set of cables that are unused. Would switching over to those cables have any affect?

I'm cutting very close to a tree with 99 so recent winds might have pushed the dish into its path.

    Thanks, Dan.

    Here are my test results:

    101 mostly 70s and 80s
    110 82 86
    119 80s

Is 99c the only sat you are having problems with? Have you tried a new LNB assembly? How long has this been going on?

Yes it's only happening on 99c. I'm thinking of getting a SWM LNB. I'm currently using a Zinwell 4x8 multiswitch system. It's been going on since early summer.

Yes that is an option for sure. how did you know to spray water on the dish?

Any trees practically in line with the dish?
If it was fine all winter and spring and problem started in early summer, mother nature may have gotten in the way.

If not, tweek the dish per the video instructions and try to improve the 99c

No trees at all. I'm in the 90's 2/3's of the day, why would I need to tweek it?

I checked everything else, and on cloudy days no problems. The only thing I could think of is that the LNB was getting too hot.
