Steve, Register for the party that you usually agree with and at least be able to take part in their primaries. But unlike some people I've known who lived in NY, please make sure you vote for the best people. My Grandmother used to just vote democrat down the line, you'd ask her who she voted for and she would just say "Democrat". Now she being a working class immigrant who came to the US in 1903 (died in 1975), you can imagine that there was very little she would have in common with a Republicans of the time, but it always seemed to me to be weird to not know who you were voting for.

My father never voted in a primary because he never felt at home with any of those parties. He would have preferred places like Georgia or Montana where you don't have to be a member to vote in a primary. But with the recent issues with Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney, you may see primarys require party membership in the future.

There just has to be more to this story than what we're hearing. The behavior of those marshalls seems so far out of whack. If the doctor's account is true, then the marshalls involved need to be fired ASAP.

But as for the one lady who was spooked by the marshalls "taking control of the plane," well duh, lady. In the event of an attempted hijacking, the air marshalls are there to take the terrorists down, take control of the cabin, and keep everybody safe until the plane is on the ground. I love how some of these people want terrorism eliminated, but freak out the second the situation isn't comfortable.

It is standard operating procedure in hostage rescue that you handcuff everyone you don't have immediate identicifcation on and wait for verification of identity before uncuffing them. Better to handcuff grandma for 30 minutes than miss a terrorist and have him lite off a grenade when you aren't looking. Perhaps this type of mentality was so in the heads of these marshalls that they jumped into "Combat Mode" when they really just needed to calm the situation.

My big question is where do these Marshalls come from. I'm sure there are a share of prior law enforcement (FBI, MPs, State and Local Police officers) who have taken the job, but I wonder how many Mall Rent-A-Cops were hired just to fill the ranks. That is always a problem when there is a quick need and not enough people out there. If these guys are former "Rent-A-Cops" than it wouldn't shock me that they over reacted???

Well you notice that there is no further uproar about it. Aside from this new press article, the matter has been pretty much dropped. Congress is not calling for investigations, 24 hour news channels are not showing it. People are not crying out for policies and proceedures to be changed.

Yea a person or two may file suit, but they will lose the suits, you have no rights when you are flying a commercial airline.

As long as better training comes from this incident, I'll be happy with the outcome.

Mike is correct. For some years already if you even looked crossways at an attendant on a plane, you could count on being met upon landing by the police. The attendant can yell at you, shove you around, and threaten you, but if you respond in any way, or even if you don't, they can have you arrested and you don't have a prayer. You are guilty.

Wouldn't be fun if someone boarded a plane wearing a backpack that looked like a parachute?

That would never fit in the overhead compartment, they would make you check the baggage in the storage cabin :p

It's been done as I am sure you recall, a fellow hijacked a plane back in the '70's and jumped out with his cash ransom never to be heard from again. What was that guy's name again? I flew back from Washington DC to Minneapolis at about the same time after motorcycling from Minneapolis to WDC. When I attempted to get on the plane I had only a small duffle bag, a leather jacket, and a helmet. Everything in the bag was removed and gone through very carefully at security. I can still remember holding up my long johns and asking "Is this what you are looking for?". I think they had a better sence of humor back then. Today making a comment like that would get me beat up in the back room.

    That's the guy.

I figured out why the sky marshals reacted as they did.....
They misunderstood when they were told Delta FLIGHT. They thought they were told Delta FORCE. Must have been the cel phone connections. :D
