    It is a digital compression/encoding scheme that is used on the signal DirecTV sends from the satellite. Most of DirecTV transmissions are in MPEG2 format. The new HD transmissions use MPEG4, which provides more compression, thus allowing them to squeeze more channels into the same amount of bandwidth.
