I have DISH at my primary residence and DirecTV at my second rental vacation home, but recently sold that 2nd home. So when I called to discontinue the DirecTV there, I was connected to retention who offered me a great package to "move" my service to my primary residence (thereby displacing DISH). HD PVR for $550, free SD PVR, two regular SD receivers, free install, HBO 6 mos for $2, and one TIVO fee for both PVR's. I hadn't really intended to do anything but disconnect, but with a deal like that, how can I refuse? I was informed that DirectTV has two new birds in the sky and plan 150 (?!) HD channels by the end of the year??

I currently have an 801 for my HD but would sure like to be able to time shift. DISH's HD PVR's leave something to be desired from what I read, and are more expensive to boot. Best I can tell, DISH has little to no comparable retention incentives - or do they?

The standard price for an HD dvr for directv is now $499. Big boxes selling them for $599 less $100 rebate.

OK, if I go with D, I'll ask them to go lower on the DVR, but anyone know if Dish has anything close in retention incentives?

If you ask, they will probably offer a credit to make the effective price of the DVR lower. They have a very cunsumer-friendly retention dept. Apparently, they understand the value of keeping existing subs happy, unlike Dish. Nothing is a better advertisement than satisfied customers.

You can allways call, and see what Dish has to offer. My guess is a handful of PPV coupons, $5 off HD Pack for 6 months, and MAYBE an offer to LEASE a 942 HD DVR for $250. But, that fabulous <sarcasm> deal is usually reserved only for new customers.

If you're into HD, remember that Dish does have the Voom10 (only if you have a line to the 61.5 bird). OTOH, DirecTV has ALL major distant nets in HD, for those living in those network's owned and operated areas. (Dish has only CBS.) DirecTV also has Universal HD instead of TNT-HD. The DirecTV HD DVR also has proper local OTA guide info for your OTA HD and digital channels. (Dish, for some odd reason, has difficulty with this simple function.) That is an absolute necessity for DVR recording of OTA. The DirecTV HD DVR also has TWO OTA tuners vs. Dish's one. Again, a must-have for OTA recording.
