USB wifi adapters are so much cheaper than other ethernet options ( my house isnt wired for ethernet and no crawl space or attic access. Has anyone heard if or when the USB ports will go live on the hr20's?

There is no plan to support USB networking on the HR20 at this time.

    As he said.

There are no plans at all to offer USB networking support.

    To many devices
    To many drivers
    To many possibilities

There is a "remote" chance, that DirecTV may offer a specific adapter in the future. to limit most of the possible complications (ala the method of Microsoft with XBOX360)

Until them... You need an ethernet bridge device.

TiVo had exactly the problem Earl describes - manufacturers would introduce incompatible changes without changing model numbers, old working models would get replaced by new non-working ones, etc. They threw in the towel and came out with their own adapter, which also allowed the adapter to offload some work from the CPU.

Given that the HR20 has an Ethernet port (until recently, TiVos didn't), there isn't a lot of motivation for DirecTV to go the route of USB wireless given the headaches it would cause.

...now if they came out with a DIRECTV-branded Wi-Fi network adapter and put the setup routine in the HR20's firmware, that would be cool.
