I'm thinking of replacing my Sony AVR with a new Denon 2313. Are there any issues with this Denon - or Denon in general - in relation to D*? I think I remember hearing about some handshake issues at one point - do they still exist? Or have they been resolved?

I currently have HDMI from HR24 to Sony AVR, then HDMI (for video only) from AVR to TV and it works great, never any handshake issues. Can I expect the same with the Denon?

I have a Denon 2113ci and have no issues with the 2 HR24s I run through it.

That said, anything HDMI related can glitch at any given moment. :(

One thing I did find out is that when you are going to plug HDMI into the Denon is to unplug the Denon since that is really the only time it is not 'on' in some state. I had some issues when hot plugging the HDMI and that cured the issue.

I have a Denon AVR3313ci and it works great with my DirecTV stuff. Simple HDMI connections.

OK good to hear. Speaking of hearing, how do the Denon's sound? Do you think I'll notice a big improvement from my Sony STR-DH810?

Absolutely! The Denon is very much better than any Sony I've ever had or heard.

Also, when you get it, during the setup routine it will want to do the Audyssey setup and that is critical to getting the best out of the Denon imo.

How is dialog on the Denon's? With our Sony, the center channel dialog can be hard to understand sometimes and we ofter have to turn it up and rewind.

Neither my Denon 4311 or 3312 have any issues with DirecTV except that the 3D info from the HR24 is not getting passed to my Panasonic 8000 projector completely - everything plays but the guide for the 3D channels is grayed out. Must not be the Denon's fault since a direct connection from the HR24 to the projector does the same thing.

Denon has been my favorite brand for several years. Great sound and very reliable. Onkyo receivers are great from what I read, but I recall some folks posting about relay clicks on some Onkyo receivers several years ago when DirecTV changed from 5.1 to 2.1 for commercials. I suspect all that has been fixed by now.

On more question: with my Sony TV and Sony receiver, I have it programmed so when I hit the power button on the D* remote, it turns on the HR24 and TV - which in turn powers up the receiver. All of this is without having the slide the remote to AV1. With the Denon, will I likely have to use AV1 to turn it on? I used to have to do this with my previous TV.

That was one thing that really impressed me when I switched to the Denon, at all volume levels, the dialog is very easy to hear.

I think that not only will you be pleased with the higher volume performance, but even more pleased with the lower volume performance. I know that I was.

The Denon's also have HDMI control, so yes, if you set it up that way, your tv will still turn on the Denon as well. Thats how my setup is configured with my 3312. The tv+power button on the D* remote turns on both the dvr and the tv, then a few seconds later the Denon turns on. If you are having trouble hearing dialog form the CC, then your CC is either not a good one, or you dont have your system configured correctly as far as channel balances and the like.

So I got the 2313 all hooked up yesterday and I can definitely tell a difference from my old Sony - and I haven't even had a chance to run Audessey yet. But I have noticed it runs much warmer than my Sony. It sits inside a wooden entertainment center behind glass doors with just minor openings in the back (not a good design I know). With the Sony I had contemplated getting a cooling fan of some kind and now I think I have to or the Denon won't last long.

Does anyone have some good recommendations for a cooling fan?

How much shelf clearance does it have above the unit? Thats what is more important. If its shoehorned in there with no top clearance, thats where you will run into trouble.

    There's about 5" above it.

I have a Sony bluray home theater which sounds really good when you raise the sound level to each speakers and subwoofer, and also sounds good when connected to laptop using headphone jack/audio cable, I previously had a 9 year old Panasonic DVD home theater system which did had a lot of bass and gets really loud but not to good on the dialogue which I might consider selling, I hope this Sony last as much as the Panasonic.

Doubts your statement would apply to my Sony STR-DA5600ES or any of their ES models.

Sony ES Gear is on par with Denon's offerings...the Sony regular line is pretty much crap.

Possibly, but at the price of that one I'd have to listen to someone else's! :)

They do run warm by design. To satisfy my OCD I got a dual USB fan which I plugged into the front USB slot on the Denon. The fans only run when the unit is on.
