IN this mornings Arizona Republic Athletic Directer Steve Patterson threw a few haymakers at DirecTV, likening the giant television provider to the "big fat guy (that) waddles up" and refuses to pay full price for a hamburger. Patterson also accused DirecTV of bargaining in bad faith, saying it's" disgustingly low-ball offer" to distribute Pac-12 Networks was a conspired effort to "put and end to individual sports networks:. It won't give the Pac-12 the samedeal it negotiated with the Big Ten because Big Ten fans are more collegial and loyal, with the multitude of West Coast transplants are reticent to give up DirecTV's assortment of NFL products.

Wow, lambasted by an AD. Time to sell the stock! Does he even know what "conspired" means? I think not....

I don't know about Charlie's offer of if anybody knows what conspired means, but I do know that we don't have the Pac-12 Network and if you like sports you have to wonder what the hang up is with the self proclaimed "Sports Network".

So the ASU AD admits the PAC 12 fans aren't as loyal as the Big 10 fans are, but he wants to be paid as much as the Big 10 is. Doesn't he realize that tv network rates are based on how popular the networks are? Does he think Directv pays Reelz as much as TNT?

I'd like to see Directv pick up the PAC 12 network, but demeaning your potential customer ( which is what Directv is in relation to the PAC 12) doesn't seem to be the best way for the PAC 12 to make it happen. Maybe the AD should realize his hamburger isn't as good, i.e., popular as the Big 10 burger.

My guess is the SEC will have a much stronger case to make with Directv, and it will have the leverage to make a Big 10 level deal.

More evidence that the PAC 12 wants the Big Ten deal rather than the deal it made with Dish. Although, the deal it made with Dish is like the Dish/Big Ten deal.

The AD is privy to the facts of the offer made and not accepted. Nobody here is. I'll take his word and blame D* for the channel(s) not being on.

I'll stand behind directv 100% on this. Good on them. Yes, I'm an ASU alum (Sundevils!) but Patterson sounding like a whiny little kid who was told it's bedtime and he doesn't want to go, does not help matters at all. Times like this that make me embarrassed to state I AM an alum.

Worry about your sports Patterson... THEN, once they win everything in sight, THEN you can worry about other things.

We do know that a deal with DIRECTV will directly benefit his school. Why shouldn't he want DIRECTV to "pay full price"?

This could have easily been DIRECTV's response to a PAC 12 argument.

Steve Patterson was the president of the Portland Trail Blazers during the franchise's darkest years. He has zero credibility and his words mean nothing.

Logic. The AD said his stance. Why would DirecTV have the same argument?

Logic would say Directv will not pay the same for a channel that has fewer potential viewers, thus lower ratings.

I'm not aguing that Pac-12 fans are as loyal as Big Ten fans or even SEC fans, but you talking about big apples to slightly smaller apples here, not apples to oranges. You can't tell me that fans from the two Oregon and Washington schools are not wildly loyal. ASU and AU are absolut fanatics (hence the name fans). UCLA and USC, comon. Nebraska doesn't have much of a fan base right? We're talking TV here which means advertising dollars. Think LA has any TV viewers? They don't even have an NFL team, it's college sports (football) or nothing till basketball season starts. Probably no UCLA basketball fans that would watch Pac-12 games on "D". You can say Steve Patterson is grandstandimng all you want but it's been over a year and this is the first complaint you've heard from him. He says that "D" is not negotiating in good faith. Either they are or they aren't. Believe who ever you want. It's not like HE called a press conference to make these statements. Maybe a few of the other Pac-12 AD's will chime in now that the ice has been broken.

I thought on the other major thread on this in the Programming forum, that the Pac-12 Net. is managing just fine without DIRECTV's carriage.

So why are people like the ASU's AD here still whining like this?

As bush league as Patterson's statements are, he is head and shoulders above Cal's AD, who made a "funny" video, sometime ago, perhaps six months or so.

Verizon FiOS hasn't signed up the Pac-12 network as yet, either. My contract with FiOS ends this month, but there's not much point in switching back to DirecTV if I can't get Pac-12 college football there either.
