I think I misunderstood the title of this thread. MicroBeta, are you still testing your HR23? What's up with that?

Yep. Unfortunately when they barely pay these people above minimum wage to take abuse 8+ hours a day it doesn't take long to realize you're better off at Walmart. :eek2: Turnover is soooo high in the customer service/help desk industry it's not even funny. That's why so many companies outsource it to India. They figure since people don't stick around more then a few months anyway why not just outsource it and pay people $8 a day instead of $8 an hour. We are lucky that DirecTV doesn't do that for the most part.

I actually lasted nearly 2 years but it was only so I could get a promotion off the desk and into 2nd level. Over 10 years ago and I still shudder about doing help desk work. I don't envy anyone that does it for a career.

Again, certainly no excuse. But it is what it is unfortunately.

The reason for the HR22 is that the wideband tuners used in the HR23 are still in short supply. If there were more available, HR22 production could be discontinued, but in reality, HR22s still make up about 2/3 of current production, due to the limited availability of wideband tuners needed for the HR23.

See above. Was actually asking why an HR22 and not simply an HR21 with 500GB drive? :) /steve

I'm not sure that's really the case. May I ask your source?

I think to avoid having people say, "My buddy has an HR21 and he gets 100 hours of HD on his, and I have one that only gets 50!" and bombarding CSRs who wouldn't be able to explain it without having a database of serial numbers and such to check.

Earlier I posted that my Denon was only showing stereo input from the HR23 DVR...Well, Roadrunner nailed it. Last night DD 5.1 was pumping into my Denon from the HR23 and the sound was great. Even my wife remarked how much better the picture was compared to the old Dish 622. Colors and sharpness are great over hdmi. I hope more of this model is available to all soon. Glad I came over from Dish!

Besides the 500GB drives the HR22 may have other changes that helped to reduce the cost of the overall unit. Some manufacturers will do this with revision numbers...DirecTV does it with a new model number.

On topic -- HR23s are available. I've had two of them since Jan. The way I got them was to refuse to let them install HR22s. I told them to come back when they had the the HR23s they said I was getting. Sure enough they had them a week later. Been almost flawless since. Love DirectTV! Beats TWC hands down on HD channels (except locals).

I say almost flawless, after last software upgrade, the one I have hooked up to the net progessively gets slower to change channels or browse the guide. Over a few days, it will start to get to where it takes 10 secs or more to change channels. Only way to recover is with a hard power reset. Must be a memory leak of some sort. Wonder if anyone else has seen this.

That's because DirecTV makes a point to not promote the differences between the models, the primary one that most people would care about is the hard drive size. Obviously they don't want to have to deal with having to make sure pepole get a specific model and they feel it's not worth the cost. If they thought they could make money by selling different models for different prices, they would do it.

If they gave people the option of paying $199 for a 250GB drive, $249 for 500GB, $299 for 750GB or however they priced it, I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to pay more for the larger hard drive units. But those revenues would be offset by the costs of having to ensure the customers get the correct models, and D hasn't figure out how to make that work.

IIRC, DirecTV only referers to it as an HD DVR+. Generally they don't even use the model numbers. :)

Well, that's all an HR22 actually is, an HR21 with a larger hard drive. :D

But in the inventory system you have to somehow designate the difference, thus the model number change.

I had an install today to replace one of my SD receivers with a HD DVR and I received a HR23. As others have said you have no control over what is brought to your home, it is luck of the draw. But I am proof that they are in circulation.

Reasoning that the HR23 is pretty much a must have is (1) no bbcs and(2) 500G hard drive. It kind of stinks that new customers are getting them and long time subscribers can't.
