Talk about a very cool cell phone... I just got mine yesterday and love it. In some ways it was a downgrade from my Cingular 8125 with the full Windows Mobile 5, but I would much rather have the form factor of the Blackjack and 3G connectivity. So far it just is amazing...

I've run three tests of the Internet connection and have found the speed to be from 600kbps to a little over 1Mbps. Absolutely amazing for a cell phone in my opinion.

Can you compare the two of them? I'm going to be buying ONE of them in the next month-2 months. I'm torn between the functionality of the 8125 and the coolness of the blackjack.....

You really have to decide what is important to you.

If you want 3G, stay away from the 8125 and go Blackjack. Now the new 8525 evens the playing field by adding 3G to the same basic phone as the 8125.

Telephone wise, the Blackjack just blows the doors off of either the 8125 or 8525. Personally I feel it has the best call quality I've experience in a very long time. It may have something to do with the fact it is a Qualcomm chipset for the cell phone (weird isn't it that the maker of all things CDMA is making chips for GSM phones).

Now for functionality. The built in apps are not as robust on the Blackjack. That's the reality of a Windows Mobile Smartphone versus full Windows Mobile. For me, the apps on the Blackjack meet my needs. If you need the ability to edit Word and Excel files on the go, then steer clear of Blackjack. I use mine to field about 50 work emails a day, and it meets my needs. I can view everything I need to so it doesn't nother. Media player is awesome. I carry around about 8 horus of music to listen to when traveling.

For usability, the Windows Mobile smartphones are way better as telephones. The keypad being right there is awesome. I personally love the way Samsung split the columns of number keys, and find it a piece of cake to dial one handed. I always dreaded dialing phone calls with my 8125. Was always a little dicey punching numbers with your fingers and oftentimes I needed my stylus to efficiently dial.

Here are my two gotchas with the Blackjack after three weeks of heavy use:

    1. The battery stinks. You'll want to pay the $45 for the extended life battery. It's well worth it, and makes the phone much better in this regards.
    2. The proprietary Samsung plug is annoying. I've become so used to having a mini-USB connector for all our phones that it's made me a little peeved to have to go buy a new car charger. One interesting thing is that there are a lot of companies that make adapters to go to a 3.5mm headphone adapter from the Blackjack. I love this because now I can use my noice-cancelling headphones with my phone on flights. Now if they would just make one to go from the Samsung connector to a female mini-USB I would be in heaven.

All in all I love my Blackjack. Definitely splurge for the battery upgrade if you buy one.

PS - Don't think that the 8125 and 8525 are all rosy with the mini-USB. They have one major annoyance. When the battery is fully drained, their internal charging circuit draws more than the 500ma allowed in the USB spec. The wall charger that comes with the phone is a 1000ma charger, and is the only charger (car or wall) that will recharge your phone when it goes completely dead. Totally sucks if your on the road and relying on your car charger.... Has happened to me.

Is there no way to install apps on the blackjack? I don't know that I fully understand the difference between the two software sets (WM5 and Smartphone)

To get the headset adapter, I bought it from eBay. Some of the cell phone accessory companies carry them, but they were all out of stock. Just search for Blackjack headset adapter on eBay and they'll come up.

I have a 1GB microSD card from SanDisk. It's not one of the high speed cards, but it's more than adequate for music.

Lastly, I bought the Samsung leather belt clip case. It's the best one I found for it. If you get it though don't be surprised if it's a really tight fit when it arrives. You need to just pop the Blackjack in the case for a day or two and it stretches to make it really easy to slide in and out.

    Glad you like the phone.

I missed your post a while back. You can install applications on Blackjack, but they must be for Windows Mobile Smartphone. The big difference between the two platforms is that Smartphone does not support touch screens, and has a different screen layout.

By default WM5 also ships with more or less full versions of things like Word and Excel so you can compose and edit Office files. Smartphone only comes with a viewer, and I have not heard of anyone that has found a way to create or edit these under Smartphone.

Here's the one just in case you didn't get the same one: http://www.samsung.com/Products/MobilePhones/Cingular/SGH_I607ZKACIN.asp?page=Accessories

If you did get a different one I would be curious which one as I could always use a new one.
