    Hi folks,

Thought I would throw this out for general help !

A little background: We live in NH, and we've had both Dish Network and Direct TV guys out here several times and they all say there's no hope of getting coverage. C'est la vie (but we did find it eventually).

For a multiple of reasons (one of which is because we do live in the mountains, in a tricky spot, and have to cut trees and wander around to get decent satellite exposure) we now have two 76cm dishes, one pointed to 72.7 and the other 61.5 using basic Zinwell ZKF-G52N LNB's and a VP211k receiver. We've been able to get great reception from 72.7 through Dish Network. Now we're trying to find Boston local channels and DN tech support told us if we can hit 61.5 we could get them. So....we cleared a few more trees and got a good signal from 61.5 and all the right channels (6331 in particular) show up on the program guide, but do not come in. We get a signal loss message when we try to receive locals, but the others work fine.

These are the channels we're hoping to find:

    2-00 WGBH BOSTON, MA (PBS) - 6324 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 4-00 WBZ BOSTON, MA (CBS) - 6319 HD 61.5° 23s23 A (cbs) 5-00 WCVB BOSTON, MA (ABC) - 6318 HD 61.5° 23s23 A (abc) 7-00 WHDH BOSTON, MA (NBC) - 6320 HD 61.5° 23s23 A (nbc) 9-00 WMUR MANCHESTER, NH (ABC) - 6331 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 11-00 WENH DURHAM, NH (PBS) - 6329 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 25-00 WFXT BOSTON, MA (FOX) - 6321 HD 61.5° 23s23 A (fox) 27-00 WUNI WORCESTER, MA (UNIVISION) - 6326 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 38-00 WSBK BOSTON, MA - 6323 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 44-00 WGBX BOSTON, MA (PBS) - 6330 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 50-00 WBIN DERRY, NH (MYTV) - 6325 HD 61.5° 23s23 A 56-00 WLVI CAMBRIDGE, MA (CW) - 6322 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 60-00 WNEU MERRIMACK, NH (TELEMUNDO) - 6327 HD 61.5° 23s23 A 62-00 WMFP LAWRENCE, MA - 6332 HD 61.5° 23s23 A 66-00 WUTF MARLBOROUGH, MA (TELEFUTURA) - 6328 HD 61.5° 25s23 A 68-00 WBPX BOSTON, MA (ION) - 6333 HD 61.5° 23s23 A

I'm sure we're overlooking something - would anyone have any idea what ?

    Thanks !
    Jim

Are you sure dish has added them to your package and turned them on? Worth calling and checking.

PS. I live in NH and directv told me the same thing a few times--even though I currently had directv and had had it for over ten years in the same location!!

Well, I've had limited success with DN tech support. They've assured me that I have those channels, they are "turned on", and keep asking to have a "service tech" come out and jiggle the wires.

Maybe that particular dish needs to be "fine tuned".

"got a good signal from 61.5" what are your signal levels on transponders 23 and 25 ?

Could be - but it's puzzling to me. Signal strength is very good (>50) and all the other "non-local" channels come in great - just about as good 72.7.

Anything in the local 6XXX range just don't come across.

Have you looked for your locals at the channel numbers that they broadcast with.

Dish maps locals to their original channel number.

Yes - I tried both entering original channel numbers (2, 4, 5, 9, 11, etc.) directly into the remote, and "scanning" for local channels.

Like I said the DN 61.5 channels (6331, 6332, etc.) come up on the program guide - but have no programming and yield a "lost signal" error message when pressed.

Maybe it is time for a service call.

If I had any trust whatsoever for DN, I would let them send a tech here.

Unfortunately for everything I've gathered for their online/telephone tech support, incorrect billing, sending my the same receiver incorrectly twice, and what I believe is a lack of a basic understanding of their business - I don't think that will help either.

But I am an optimist..... :)

Maybe I'm missing something... but you're in NH and you're trying to get Boston, MA locals?

Easy to miss I'm told - southern NH uses the Boston Locals (says DN).

Perhaps the spot beam is not covering your area. It would not be the first time a spot beam failed to cover the entire market. The Scranton-Wilkes Barre PA locals are the locals for Williamsport PA but at least at the beginning the spot did not cover that part of the market.

That's what I'm wondering too... not that the thread starter was trying to do something inappropriate, but that perhaps he actually lives outside of the footprint of the spotbeam so while Dish might add it to his account he might never be able to get those locals.

Over near Peterborough. Fringe to no coverage was actually my layman's guess. This weekend I'm going to bring some apparatus outside, sit in a comfortable chair next to the dish (probably with a Sam Adams), and attempt to tweak it.

I've got a great LOS to 72.7 for all the HD stuff, so maybe the locals are off on a 61.5 fringe angle or something. Maybe over-optimistic but I'm hoping that the 76cm dish will help. The second dish I used for OTA - but the wife wants "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC, so I have my marching orders.

I'll let you know how it turns out. In any event, the Sam will be good..... :)

These maps seem to indicate we're inside the best coverage area, we're close to the MA/NH border:

Got them! Took a little bit of a swing south (not much - maybe a pencil line width on the azimuth) - but they came right in.

Had a great day for "dish tweaking" - beautiful weather. Odd that all but the locals would come in without the tweak.

All of these came in nicely:
