I'm looking to build a DVR to save some money and to do something constructive. I have an old Directv Tivo and I was thinking about using the case from it? I'm really just looking to use the case, not Tivo software. Would I need a particular motherboard or special parts to make this work? I'm just in the planning stage now, so any and all advice would be VERY appreciated.

Look into the requirements for buiklding a "myth" machine. You can adapt it to the same case as your old tivo unit.

I'm not really sure what those cases look like but be careful of ventilation.. PCs generate a LOT more heat than the specialized chips in a dvr..
