I'm considering swapping some of my HR24s for C41s and wondering what the power consumption savings would be if I made this switch. Anyone here try putting a Kill-a-Watt or similar device on both to see what the difference is?

My guess would be enough to buy one cup of coffee a year.

Considering my Hot water heater only cost me about $500 a year.

The additional recording space alone would make me favor the HR24s.

Swapping HR24 for C41 in my opinion is a big step down.

You lose 2 tuners, also lost additional remote streaming option, as well as grabbed another tuner from your Genie.

Not something I would do, But that's just me!

Out of curiosity, is the power draw difference sufficient to be a factor in your considerations? Is your main consideration in making the change to reduce power? I can see the justification if you are off-grid (especially solar), but otherwise the financial difference seems pretty small to justify the change.

The power pulled by DVRs is massive. I've deactivated four DVRs over the last year and that alone has had a huge impact on my bills.

And consider the c41 takes basically no power when off since it doesn't need to receivers guide data constantly, but the the HR24 is running constantly 365/24. It's big.

And really the client never takes a tuner if you record what you watch. It always amazes me that's the first argument from people with all DVRs. If you have all DVRs don't you record everything? And if you do it's simply about being able to record without conflicts and having enough storage space. Number of tuners for live tv at each tv location is inconsequential.

I'd venture to say that most people leave more lights on than what a dvr uses - 24x365. Depending on your kwhr cost, a dvr is probably $2-4 a month.

Not a big impact on a $200-250 a month power bill.

Actually, I measured a C41 this afternoon. 6 watts on, 5 watts off . . . so it's basically a night light. But it does use a tuner when not playing a recording and can grab that tuner from a scheduled recording.

I'd still go with the HR. . .

The way I see is, if you already have them (HRs) keep them. if you are starting from scratch, get the C31/41 as they are free as part of the new sub promo. And as soon as you can get a free upgrade, replace the clients with HRs
