As usual, Ron White's big saying is dead on: "You can't fix stupid".
This is the latest in a series of accidents in the Charlotte area caused by an idiot driving around lowered railroad crossing gates:

In previous weeks, there have been two incidents of people driving a car or SUV around crossing gates in Charlotte in an attempt to beat a light rail train.

There also has been a spate of accidents where a trucker has attempted to drive across a railroad crossing clearly marked as unpassable by trucks due to steep approaches to the tracks, gotten hung up and then hit by a train.

There's always some dumb s.o.b. who doesn't get the word, and this isn't limited to Charlotte - drivers have tried to beat light rail trains in Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, DC, Washington and California with similar results.

Whenever I hear about these, I feel for the engineer of the train. He knows there's absolutely nothing he can do, physics pretty much dictates that you can't stop in time, even with lightning fast reflexes and an eagle eye, and knowing the driver of the vehicle did something he shouldn't have done, but I'm sure that doesn't exactly make it easier to take.

Maybe there's prize money, that I don't know about, for winning the Darwin Award.

This is why we will probably never have large-scale high-speed rail in this country. Some dumba** will climb the fence and get hit and his family will sue for, and probably win, millions.
