I am in Vernon Hills and had tons of problems with CBS via D* but the problem went away around New Years. Just the occasional very minor glitch now, no worse than any other channel

The problem has not gone away. Not even close. DNS until the feb transition for my shows. I get no blurps on any of the other stations except ABC (7). But the blurps on 7 are the same that they have always been and 25% as frequent as CBS. I probably get 1 an hour on ABC, while on CBS it is at least 4 per hour.

I *never* get any on NBC or FOX except at the beginning of a recording when my HR21-200 is firing up 2 recordings.

I have written the CBS engineer with no response. I wish they get there act together because the quality of the CBS image is, in my opinion, the sharpest channel available currently.

Location is downtown MDU with heated dish, SWM and signal strength > 90% on all relevant transponders.

hey guys, I suggest leaving them alone until post Feb 17th transition, I had their engineer take a look at their digital chain due to the "fast blur" encoder issue that WBBM has and they told me they have a new digital chain and encoder ready to go for the channel 12 migration. I doubt they'll want to change anything on the current legacy transmission chain now.

I can probably dig out some relevant emails if anyone might be interested

Thank God I switched all my CBS season passes to channel 390. I've had NO issues since then.

Anyone know if the delay of the DTV transition will also delay CBS switching to Channel 12 ?

You're luck you still have that channel, but I wouldn't count on keeping it. I had the CBS East HD feed for years until they cut me off a couple months ago. They definitely seem to be auditing this now.

As a point of information that may apply to Chicago CBS viewers...

I am in Atlanta and a couple of weeks back our CBS affiliate began exhibiting pixlelization and audio dropouts and this is just not a problem we ever see in the Atlanta locals.

Realizing that DirecTV CSR's are not going to be any help with this kind of thing, nor would I expect them to be, and the fact that we have no direct access to DirecTV engineering staff, I pursued the problem at the local level with the CBS affiliate, channel 46.

I was able to reach the head of engineering for the station and explained the problem. I received a very candid response and in a subsequent email was tols that the problem was affecting CBS affiliates across the country. Here is the response:

    Larry,

We are painfully aware of the problem.
It is not a DirecTV issue, however DirecTV makes the situation worse as they take our signal off the air, ship it back to LA (via fiber) then re-encode it to MPEG 4 for distribution.
It is not even our problem at WGCL.
The problem is in the new CBS network distribution system. That system is what CBS uses to get the signal to us.
Three weeks ago they changed all the receivers and switching equipment at our station, and upgraded the modulation stream they use.
There is a bug in the system that causes drop-outs (mostly audio) that occur randomly….about twice to three times an hour.

I was on the phone with them again this morning and as of yet they to not have a solution. They are meeting with the manufacturer again this week.

    Sorry for the disruption.

    Steve

I’m one of the few who can still retain his HD DNS feeds and won’t have them cut off despite the audits.

If CBS was carrying the real Super Bowl (Daytona 500) I might have blown a head gasket. Their audio is terrible. Thank goodness for FOX

I wonder what exactly is "upgrading the modulation stream" mean?
