Here are the answers to many unsolved questions.

Norfolk, New Orleans & Providence will be added by Dish "hopefully targeted for the summer of 2004".

I'm suprised that there has not been a press release with all the cities slated for this year. E* is ahead on locals, far ahead until D* gets D7s going - and STILL ahead after then. D7s is just a catchup to where E* already is.

Speaking of D7S makes one wonder how many new cities D* will actually launch in a single week. :)

They have 41 listed, with rumors that they are already backhauled. I doubt if they will flip the switch on all of them the same day. Maybe 10 a week for a month? That still sounds overwhelming for any CS phonebank to take the orders! Five a week for two months may be the fastest they can go.

The trick is what they do AFTER D7s. FSS? 105 markets on 101-119 is a good deal, but the next 105 markets for D* will require something different. D7s gets them past the bandwidth roadblock they hit last July and places them at the next bandwidth roadblock.

In any case ... E* has 101 now, promised 11 more by end of January (Columibia-Jefferson City, Davenport, Ft. Wayne, Grand Junction-Montrose, Green Bay-Appleton, Johnstown-Altoona, Juneau, Lincoln & Hastings-Kearney, South Bend-Elkhart, Traverse City-Cadillac, and Tri-Cities TN/VA), and had 8 others listed on the card at the CES booth (Duluth, El Paso, Fargo, Harlingen, Medford, Portland, Puerto Rico and Topeka). The three above make 123 markets - only 87 to go!

Yeah, E* has to get the SuperDISH flowing.

BTW: D* is working on a deal for partial use of 72.5w using DirecTV 5 which just requires an extra 18" dish. Telesat has Canadian approval. D* has asked for FCC approval. Could move fast if approved soon.

Direct could just turn on all the new locals for a month or two of free preview. But honestly I expect both providers to build LIL into whatever package you have.

In case you missed it, DirecTV has contracted with Telesat Canada, for capacity at the 72 degree West slot. Once DirecTV 7S is in orbit and operational at 119, DirecTV will then move DirecTV 5 to the 72 degree West slot, and add 18 more markets, which have already been announced. That takes DirecTV to 123 markets in total; by mid-year, each of the announced markets should be up and running. DirecTV has also stated they should have 130 markets operational by the end of the year.

If they get permission from the FCC to move DirecTV 5 to 72.5.

Also, the FCC told DirecTV the must have 30 more markets than planned up this year. This was part of the conditions for approval of the Newscorp takeover.

Thanks John. Greg has been posting misinformation lately and I didn't want to waste time believing what he said without a reference.

Thing is if directv and dish keep adding new slots for satellites eventually you're gonna need a Big Ugly Dish to get all of the satellites on one dish either that or a satellite farm to get them on seperate dishes. Just how is directv gonna do 101,110,119 and 72.5 on one satellite dish. That dish will fall through the roof if you put it on the roof. I can see the cable companies now laughing in 3 years with ads like "sure you can get locals and hd channels on directv or dish network, But did you see what your neighbor had to install to get those channels?" and then they'd show the 10 different dishes one neighbor had and the 4' wide dish the other neighbor had in order to get those channels. In all honesty that will probably be the downfall of dbs is that in order to serve all 210 markets they'll need a huge dish.

They are not. 72.5 will be a second dish, 18" according to the press release John so thoughtfully provided.
