Coax to VGA or DVI?

Hi all-

This DT setup is in a school's front office. The principal wants to replace the old TV in the front office with a flat screen.

Is there a COAX to VGA/DVI that would manage this? On the back of the DT modem, there is a set of RCA jacks, both in and out along with an S-Video port.

Any ideas on how to move forward with this wonderful project? :>)

Thanks,
Mark

Best bets use the RCA

Huh? What's a DT? You mean DIRECTV receiver? If so what's the model? Have you gotten the new monitor yet?

Not sure why you'd be asking about dvi or vga at all...

DT=DirectTV receiver

Model number D12-100

The current setup is satellite coax in, coax out to old TV.

Desired setup is eliminating the TV and using a computer monitor on the wall eliminating the big tube TV.

Hence, the question about how to get a VGA/DVI signal out of the above to a computer monitor I don't have quite yet.

Thanks,
Mark

An S-Video/Composite to VGA adapter can be purchased from Amazon for about $15. However, I have no idea how well they work.

You need a small Flat screen TV instead of a monitor so you can use the red and white for audio and the yellow for video out of the D12.

If you go with the flat screen TV

Tylorert has a valid point with the sound issue. There is a red/white RCA audio out of the D12, so maybe a cable to a mini-phono plug to a computer monitor with built in speakers.

But a flat screen TV probably would be better.
If you go with the flat screen just use the existing coax the D12 is a SD receiver so probably little improvement in video quality.

What you need to do is what I do. You need a video capture software/hardware. You would connect the D12 to this device, I personally use ElGato EyeTV HD with component cable, but you can use composite as well. You then connect the capture device to your PC via USB and display the D12 via your current video connection.

Try to convince the principal to upgrade to HD. The D12 won't work in a couple years anyway.

the point is that this is the path of least resistance to get video to a computer monitor using what is already connected to it, the desktop.

I'm not sure the monitor is currently hooked up to a computer (or if it will be when the set up is complete). The TS said they want to mount the computer monitor on the wall and that he doesn't currently have the monitor.

At least I put out a workable solution, under the assumption that a desktop is available. The other one was to buy a flat screen. No one else has chimed in to help the OP but jump quick on those who did..

Uh, post 8 was really the best suggestion for several reasons, including more workable in many people's eyes than trying to use a capture card.
that suggestion was noted on my post, however no one else have chimed in with another suggestion but are quickly to scrutinize when another idea is presented. I would think that is the TS job to scrutinize the ideas that are given to him/her and not the posters/commentators. At the end of the day the TS here came looking for ideas and we should be free to post those and leave it up to the TS to chose the one that fits the best for him/her instead of choose for him/her.

Others all seem to agree with that suggestion. Others used terms like what I would do is... you said what you Need to do is what I did. You'd made it sound like the only option. And objectively it's hard to see your suggestion as better. You could have said another option would be to do what I do myself... my scrutiny was more to point out its an option that might be difficult in his particular environment. Goes along with pointing out the good and bad for all options.

please don't speak to others but speak only on your behalf. There are obviously more ways than one to skin a cat, let's leave the scrutiny for the TS who was the one to ask for options. You should task yourself to offer an option instead of shutting down those who have offered help on this topic.

I personally agree with trh in post #19. To me starting from post #1 its never been clear from the TS a computer is even involved here.

Just the ability to feed a D12 SD receiver to a computer monitor to be mounted on an office wall over a VGA or DVI connection.
