Is this a case of they (i.e., D*) are setting their rules to the lowest common denominator? I went online to order another HD receiver for my system. It asked if you want "shipping/self-installation" or "professional installation" when you are checking out. I select the self-install option to ship to me and then the next screen it changes to professional installation $49. What???

I call D* and the CSR tells that is weird and she's not sure what that is happening. So....she tries it and gets the same thing. She sends me over to technical support and they get the same thing. The tech CSR tells me to hold why she figures out what she can do. She comes back and says that professional installation is the only option for me since I have a SWiM system. Seriously??? I tell her no thanks and I'll figure out something else.

I call back later in the day and get the SAME response. I'm stumped. Why in the world would they tell me on both phone calls that because of the complexity of the SWiM system, that adding a box requires professional installation?

I even told them all the hardware and equipment I have as well as how many slots I have left on my SWiM switch. Frustrating. I'm not calling back. Just wanted to get my guests their own box for their room when they visit.

    FYI....my setup:
SWiM 16 (only using 11 of 16 tuner slots)
    HR34
    HR24
    HR24
    H25
    H24

Also, the location is already wired to the panel with the SWiM16. Literally, all that is needed is the coax attached and the power cord plugged in and we're go to go!

Sorry for the long-winded rant. Just confused why I ran into such a road block trying to get another box.

My guess is that they're concerned that an existing green label splitter will need to be upgraded to a larger one (probably a 2-way to a 4-way).

It may be worth it in the long run to maintain "supported" installation status.

The problem is that the install was just 4 weeks ago and has all the latest and greatest for this very setup. I read off the hardware to the agent. I have a SWiM16 and the larger 8-way green label splitter.

It might also has to do with the fact that you are still under warranty and any "mess up" that you might do can cause serious problems to DirecTV, the HSP and/or the tech.

I will not go in to details, but if a tech needs to roll to your house to connect the receiver, someone is paying for that visit and is not DirecTV!

They're probably concerned about the fact that, you could have one side of the SWM filled up, tunerwise, but still have open slots in the splitter. If you have the HR-34, one of the HR-24's and one of the receivers in on one side of the SWM, you would have one open output if you're using a 4 way splitter and 5 open slots of you are using an 8-way splitter, but there would be 8 tuners already on that side. So, any open outputs would be unusable. I know that you likely already know this. But the average DirecTV customer wouldn't.

Unfortunately, DirecTV sets up their "rules' for the average customer, not for DBSTalk members.

Which would make sense since they are the majority

Hmmm, that's what I assumed. I guess I'm stuck paying $49 for doing something I could do myself.

and actually you are getting away "easy" there should be another $49 "new customer upgrade" fee on top of the $49.00 install charge

Well while they are there make them change out that dumb 8 way high loss splitter for a four way cause there is no need for it.

In fact when they are done you should have one 2 way and one 4 way.

Five units. Swim 1 out to HR34. Swim 2 out to four way spitter one line to each box from there.

    Moving to six units.

Add one two way splitter to swim 1 out and hook up additional new box.

It's very simple, the ordering system sees an additional receiver being added (tech installed cable run). If you were swapping a reciever out, then drop shipping is an option. :righton:

If it's the $49 you're worried about, I bet if you asked nicely they could probably waive that for you or give you credits to offset the $49.
