As I see it, since both Comcast (Xfinity), DISH, and U-Verse here offer almost all the channels being discussed in HD, I have to conclude that DirecTv's "sports leader" status with all that entails, is the prime reason we are left to begging for the channels we like to watch in HD.

In a perfect world, DirecTv would package ALL its sports channels (Golf, Tennis, MLB, NFL, RSN's, etc) in a much higher priced Sports pak (to which I would subscribe), allowing the package price (which could remain the same minus the sports channels) to be able to pay to get all these missing HD channels.

Unfortunately, and I really dont see how its not against some law, the companies can mandate to DirecTv that certain channels MUST be carried in all basic packages, or NONE of them can.

While I am a proponent of capitalism, this form of it seems more like extortion to me.

Unless something changes, we will either need two providers, or have to choose between Sports and basics.

Well when I looked through the top channel ratings that were linked to earlier in this thread I must really be "niche" because I hardly watch anything on those channels. I can't remember the last time I even tuned to the USA Network.

We all have different tastes. USA has some entertaining shows. I truly want BBCA HD and any other HD added. I realize that just because I don't watch a channel that doesn't mean others don't watch.

I never really wanted HLN in HD until I was checking the QAM cable channels at work and saw Robin Meade. I now *want* HLN HD. :)

Oh I agree. I'm democratic enough to realize what I like won't be necessarily what others would like. Honestly I don't have any premium movie channels but I think if it's available D* should carry them (I'm not even sure if that's the case but I don't think so). However the 3 channels that I would really like to see are ones that seem to come up quite a bit. BBCA, TCM and to a lesser extent HLN.

    My Guess?

    - TruTV launches in HD right before the March Madness starts. That would be "not in the next few weeks, but right after". :D

No, I'm usually an optimist. I was just wondering if we're getting 1 basic channel or more than 1.

One of my top 5. :)

My others are Nat Geo Wild, HLN, Fuse and H2 for those of you keeping score.

DTV needs to match all the HD in basic channels that Dish has.

I don't have any channel that I watch that isn't already in HD, none of my 36 HR34 series links are SD.

My wife has just a few HD channels missing (E!, OWN, We, Style, Cook) from her 41 HR34 series links, but I'm honestly not sure that she'd even recognize that they're not in HD. :)

And there's zero overlap between our series links. :) Ah, maybe one.
