That makes a lot of sense. I believe they are well aware of who carries what, what people want, and what the ratings are for given channels.

Where that fits into their future plans is any ones guess.

:) DirecTV is aware. Part of ongoing success for a company is to … know the competition. That's why I limited the beginnings of potential additions in HD to eight: AMC HD, TCM HD, truTV HD, HLN HD, E! HD, Style HD, HInt'l HD, and LMN HD. These should be more than anticipated. They should be expected. It's the market.

If we pretend for a moment that an addition of 15 to 20 HDs (available only in SD on DirecTV) were to get added by, as Satelliteracer hinted (on Feb. 27) 90 days (let's say June 1), that is where the speculation gets to be fun. That those eight in the previous paragraph, under ownership by the likes of Rainbow Media, Turner, Comcast, and A&E Networks, are the beginnings. The rest are the fill-ins.

The two companies are going in two different directions. DirecTV has been increasingly successful, while the other has not been. Both have added HD channels and one has been more successful at retaining them. More HD is coming soon.

Can you find where Satelliteracer hinted that we were to receive 15-20 new HD channels? The only thing I could find was an instance where he replied to the question of any new HD expected in the next 90 days with the one word reply, "yes". It's already been speculated that this would be a few new HBO/Cinemax channels that he hinted about at the end of last year which were to follow the recent HD VOD addition. Hopefully, you're right but I hope you're not reading more into it than everyone else is.

If you can find where Satelliteracer mentioned a number please link.

At most he answered the 90 day question "yes". That did not confirm a specific number of channels (or range of numbers). Nor was the content specifically guaranteed.

Too many people add cookie crumbs and end up disappointed. Always read Satelliteracer carefully and try not to read in what he hasn't said.

I really have no interest in truTV HD, HLN HD, E! HD, Style HD, or LMN HD. I hope if they're adding channels these aren't first on the list.

    Not quite...

Please explain where you are getting this 15-20 number. As has been pointed out, he simply answered 'yes' to a question. It could be one channel...it could be 50. The fact is that no one really knows. But, to start throwing around numbers like 15-20 without basing it on anything may lead to a lot of disappointment.

The point is these things go in cycles, and there are intrinsic factors that affect these cycles. . . like bandwidth availability. D12 still isn't close to full, so there is no inherent reason why channels couldn't be added in groups, just as was done on multiple occasions last year, rather than singly.

Cherry-picking dates and then extrapolating forward from them without considering those cycles and the factors which impact them isn't all that useful, IMO. I used a ridiculous example in one direction to illuminate the point that the example I was responding to wasn't all that useful either. Both are mathematically correct, but not all that robust as to their predictive power.

this is just guess but i think new HD hbo max and something for HDpack will come in april.. the newsletter with my bill shows free previews for those in april.. might coincide with new HD for those.. max has been overlooked for a while so this would be a real good upgrade...

    Let me clear this up.…

In numerous postings here, I've noted that competitors (to DirecTV) in my area of the Detroit market have, say, 15 (or so) channels in HD that are being carried only in SD by DirecTV.

That 15 (or so) is a number estimated by me on what I would anticipate with a rollout by DirecTV within the 90-day period (posted on Feb. 27 by Satelliteracer); a date by which I would estimate no later than June 1 (which is five days after May 27, and is a Wednesday in 2011).

I am not claiming that Satelliteracer was more specific than to say … 90 days. I am not claiming that Satelliteracer specified a number. And I am not claiming that Satelliteracer specified which channels.

I am thankful to Satelliteracer, as I alluded to earlier, for mentioning the 90-day period (from Feb. 27).

A couple months back it was also suggested that DirecTV should be bought out by Oprah Winfrey.

    Not a bad suggestion. :new_smili

I knew the first response would be exactly that.

Never implied it was. Simply stating my opinion.

I agree with everything you're saying. However, I still think that 6 months is a more than reasonable measure of 'recent history'.

We're really nitpicking here unnecessarily and the bottom line is that if some magical oracle told us last Sept. 1st that we would only receive one new HD channel(and HD extra pack at that), than my guess is that 99.9% of us would be slightly disappointed. I guess a lot of it may have to do with the hype and expectations of D12 and how each of us feels they did with the initial channel launches. My 2 most-watched channels are GOLTV and FSC, so you can bet that I was floating on air last summer. But, that still doesn't mean that I can't feel a little disappointed with what I see as their 'recent history'.

Here's hoping that they really come through for all of us during the 2nd quarter...

Doctor Who premieres on BBCA on April 23rd - would really love to have it in HD for even part of the season.

Good observations. With the ones you mention — "HDpack" and "hbo max" — some variations on premium-movies channels have also dawned on me.

When I came here last September, I asked (not long thereafter) if anyone knows the number of high-definition channels DirecTV could add. This was in consideration to capacity without compromising picture quality. Someone answered 34. I mentally like to scale that back 20% — again, for sake of not "compromising picture quality" — and lower it to 25.

…34? …25? No, I don't perceive that high with numbers of potential HDs to feasibly come our way in 2011. If we were to receive, as I'm thinking, between 15 and 20 (at best) … I could imagine the eight I've mentioned (AMC HD; TCM HD; truTV HD; HLN HD; E! HD; Style HD; HInt'l HD; LMN HD); one to three more non-premiums (in the 200s and 300s channels ranges); one or two sports (maybe); one or two HD Extras; and no more than five in premium-movies multiscreens (HBO Comedy HD; MoreMax HD; maybe one more Max screen in HD; perhaps Flix HD).

I'd loathe to come across a news item in the future in which DirecTV tells us it will pad its pay-per-view screens even further with wasted HD. (That's the cynical part of me. But, in reality, DirecTV knows where it is lacking. Time for DirecTV to deliver!)
