    Quoted from another thread...

    BBCA, TCM, etc., etc., etc...

It isn't unusual for us to hear about something in testing before it's announced...

Do you want to know how many of those 170 channels I actually care about are? The number of those channels which I watch on a weekly basis is even smaller...

There are a TON of channels in HD on DirecTV that I simply do not watch...

It was "outer" the agreement. Sorry.

"I Love Lucy" airs (nationally) on DirecTV on TV Land and Hallmark Channel.

Since Hallmark Channel is the only one in HD on DirecTV, I'm assuming you're referring to it. I was not aware of it being in HD on there as the last time I saw it on Hallmark Channel, it was simply upconverted.

Dont know, guess it depends on the negotiations. Comcast includes them in the upper tier package. But then they also include most of the "HD Extra" channels as well. Guess we will see if they add them. I doubt they would add them to the Starz package though since none of the other providers do.

Satelliteracer stated the rest were launching in HD this year though (no word on if they'd be available on DirecTV... just a general statement).

I could have sworn he told me early this year, but plans do change, so I might be right...

I respect the show for what it was, as well as Lucille for what she was, but I'm not a big "I Love Lucy" fan either. There are a handful of episodes that are truly classics, as well as a few additional episodes that are enjoyable also. The ILL episode that's free is indeed a classic episode...

The TZ episode is one of my favorites...

It would be nice if they would add it. It seems that they left a slot for it at 518, unless they had planned to add MoreMax West in there. I would also like the missing Encore channels, and maybe Epix. However, I really wish that they would add more of the general entertainment channels. If they do indeed have 12 open slots, I think that the following would be a pretty good list. (Note, they are not necessarily in order of importance, just the way they are situtated in the lineup)

    1. DIY
    2. Cooking
    3. GSN
    4. Style
    5. LMN
    6. TCM
    7. FMC
    8. BBC America
    9. H2
    10. Nat Geo Wild
    11. ID
    12. TV Land

IF they do have improved encoders that will allow the compression of 6 channels per mux, with the same video quality, it would be nice to also get channels like GSN, IFC, Sundance, Outermax, RetroPlex, IndiePlex, Action, Drama, Encore W, Epix 1, 2, 3, gmc, etc...

I highly doubt all of that will happen until D14 is launched, and probably not all of them when it does.

Not recorded...FILMED...THAT is why it looks so good. Desi Arnez was a genius and opted to film the series...even though it cost him a lot more money. :)

There wasn't even a timetable on when the other Encore HD channels would launch aside from Action and Drama. Thus I had to go by what is in front of me.

Now if in fact the other Encore HD Channels will launch within the next couple of months and the new deal with Starz/Encore is what we think it is, then we could forget about any other HD for these new transponders.

Between Encore and MoviePlex, that would be ten right there assuming there would be Encore West and MoviePlex in HD. Should Outermax be added to round out the premium lineup, that would leave room for only one new HD Channel.

That's going on the assumption that it will be Encore and the plex'es...

I'm not making an assumption either way. I was just stating that they were apparently supposed to be launching this year as well...

    Winters,...
See post 1017.... Recording can be on film, tape, wire, magnetic platters, solid state drives, etc.

Do you have any figures as to relative costs back then of film vs. tape? Or just a good guess?

Well, given that he had to invent some of the technology to do what he did, yeah, it cost more. Read Desi's memoirs; they're fun.

I'm sure they are, but I've got a back log of reading right now. What did he invent?

I am more interested, though, of the relative costs back then.

I never said he did... :whatdidid

I don't get the Encore channels, so I personally hope it's something else, if it's even anything to begin with...

Well those of us who do would like a better value for our money. 1 Encore HD channel is pretty lame.

I Love Lucy is an exception in that it was shot with 35 mm film. Almost all other shows prior to 1956 were shot with television cameras and the films were kinescopes, which was a film shot of the television monitor. That probably would be better than broadcast quality SD, but no where near HD. Video tape was not invented until 1956.

The aspect ratio is still 4x3. Do they show these old shows in pillar box, or is it stretch-o-vision or some sort of croping of the top and bottom to achieve 16x9?
