so is this the start of SD MPEG 2 to MPEG 4 SD moves or are they freeing up room on the SD side for the new sports channels that are coming up?

Time to change the name to the Mpeg4 Access Fee?

I guess it's a start, but not exactly TNT moving to mpeg4 only. Still, there must be several of those low-viewer channels that this could be done with to start encouraging the process of people moving voluntarily off their old SD-only equipment, and recovering bandwidth at the same time.

Besides TruTV HD, does anyone anticipate so little as a single "basic" HD channel, already in SD, getting added by DirecTV before 2011 ends?

Well the big issues is the sports bars that still have SD boxes and many of them still have SD Composite switcher systems that need a lot more then new D* boxes to get off SD.

No, but I did ask for the cops a couple of times when they sold me open box items as new.

Doesn't mean that the DIRECTV SD receivers couldn't be swapped with HD, the HD STB's have composite video outputs still.

Yup. Even the diminutive H25! I've got one hooked up composite to a 15 year old CRT as we speak. Works like a charm.

No, not a single one. In fact I expect at least 6 more added to premium packages.

In fact I think they will drop 1-2 basic HD channels to free up bandwidth for premiums.

I have no idea, but he just asked if anyone anticipates so little as a single "basic" HD channel, already in SD, getting added by DirecTV before 2011 ends...So, yes, someone does. ;)

So, what I want to know is this: Is the bandwidth going to be the same as it was under mpeg-2, and are they going to upscale the resolution to what SD should be? (namely, 640x480 rather than the current...what is it? 480x480?)

If the answer is yes on both counts, it's going to look a LOT better.

    edit:
Oh & even if circuit city had a better deal than best buy you could just go to best buy & do a price match + get 10% of the difference off + reward zone $$ points.

I'll say 'NO' based on the lack of any recent HD "basic" channel additions. I'm waiting for Directv to surprise me with one "basic" HD channel.
