So 5 slots opened between 558 and 563. I wonder what's going there?

Are there any "HD Only" channels that would fit there but up against the HD Extra pack to make it worthwhile?

Epix, however unlikely that may be.

Considering that IFC is moving to 564, the range will probably be used for premiums and not HD Extra. I'm surprised that they're leaving Sundance with the Showtime networks and not putting it at 563 with it's sister station IFC since Showtime sold the channel to Cablevision/AMC back in 2008.

They are also clearing out the Private Network broadcasts that were in the 570s and moving them to the 9500 range, so channels 574-579 should be available in the future. Also keep in mind HD Extra isn't all "HD Only" channels, Smithsonian, Crime & Investigation and the Hallmark Movie Channel have SD counterparts that are not carried by DirecTV, so if there are any future HD Extra additions, it doesn't have to be a channel that is officially "HD only".

Because they put the gap between Sundance and IFC, that complicates it. If the space was between IFC and Hallmark movies, I would def say HD Xtra pack expansion.

Thought maybe Indieplex, retro plex, movie plex, Epix 1, Epix 2. That's 5, although the 'plex' channels are usually next to sister Encore channels on cable systems.

That would be six [6] individual channel slots.

There is also chs. 533 and 534, as well as chs. 543 and 544.

That would really be ten [10] individual channel numbers in this section of the mapping.

Let me guess (for the hell of it):
    534 MoviePlex
    543 RetroPlex HD
    544 IndiePlex HD

    560 EPiX HD
    561 EPiX2 HD
    562 EPiX3 HD
    563 EPiX Drive-In

Porn channels smack in the middle of Sundance and IFC? That wouldn't make sense.

    I second APB101's guess.

I did not know there were so many Epix channels, nor did I realize there was another gap for the Encore sister channels.

If we would get Epix, would it be in it's own premium package? I guess they would adjust the watch more save more discount to accommodate a 5th premium package? I think it should be put into HD Extra to add value to that package, but I guess ultimately that would depend on what the content owners are asking $ per subscriber.

It also occurs to me that FEARnet HD could come in.

It does seem a little weird that The Movie Channel SD/HD, now on ch. 554, is being drawn back one numerical slot. (As are those which sequentially follow TMC.) It seems like a move to accommodate the three Encore screens, with additional consideration (in case) to Showtime Family, but that slate of Showtime screens would need to be scooted down, not moved up, a notch or two.

I am not seriously placing bets on anything, at this time, but this news of the channel re-mapping more conspicuously impacting the HD Extra Pack is immediately intriguing.

As a frequent switcher, let me make a comment or two.

The Epix channels would be a good addition. The Epix 1,2,3 show blockbusters often sooner than others, but they do tend to rerun movies more than most of the other premiums. Epix Drive-In is a hoot of a channel! All those glorious 'B' movies from the past and present show up often enough to keep your nostalgia going. Want to watch some of Vincent Price's jewels? There all there at one time or another!

Another would be Reelz in HD. They have some good original shows now, though they are few they are good.
