I hope the suits at Directv are watching the Emmy tonight. Mad Men and Braking Bad must be seen in HD !

I don't care about quantity, I like quality. AMC is a Ferrari and certainly no as popular as some Honda Civics but we should get something beyond soccer next festivus.

Makes me wonder if DISH is going to start saying (if they haven't already) "We have AMC HD but DirecTV does not. You poor DTV subscribers... Hey, want to migrate over?"

We can also list the networks that DirecTV carries, that DISH doesn't. I think DISH would even consider it as it have very little influence on anyone's decision about jumping providers.

Those of you who are no longer paying $10 a month for HD, how did you get that deal? What does one need to do?

You need to have a certain level of service, don't know what that is. You also have to use Auto pay and be a customer for more than one year. Then you just call and ask if you qualify for it. It's not hard to get at all.

Until recently, Dish would have easily won that commercial "battle" on the national level. They could have just used DirecTV old anti-Voom ads against the RSNs (i.e. we give you national channels you've actually heard of.) Now, with losing Disney and ABC Family, E* can't run such commercials.

DirecTV runs that against DISH ... pointing to the PlatinumHD channels (Indiplex, Retroplex, Epix 1 & 2, Mav TV, Fashion TV and World Fishing Network being the key unheard of channels).

No channel loss is good but losing the ABC/Disney HD channels have not killed DISH. They are still there in SD (and as discussed recently in this thread, many home users can't tell the difference between HD and SD anyways).

A revised quick ad congratulating AMC on all the Emmy wins and noting the channel can be seen on DISH in HD wouldn't hurt. A montage made up of clips from the 15 basic HD channels (channels people have heard of) that DirecTV doesn't have could play well. DirecTV could retaliate pointing out the 6 DirecTV has and DISH doesn't (for basic HD) but only real thing left for DirecTV to lean back on in a retaliation ad would be RSNs.

Most people don't care if DISH has 15 or 30 channels DirecTV doesn't have. They care about their channel. Not having AMC hurts DirecTV only with customers who want it in HD ... not having ABC Family hurts DISH only with customers who want it in HD. Most customers don't care about the total ... just their channels.

Ironic considering that DirecTV used to be related to Indieplex and Retroplex (the two channels are owned by Liberty Starz). ;)

    Agreed!

DirecTV has two channels Dish doesn't in their basic package that I care about. Dish Network has 11 (8 of which I REALLY want).

Hopefully this coming month will cut that number down. :D

Disney and ABC Family are among the highest rated channels right now. (Higher rated than anything D* is missing.) If you were attempting to convince people to switch from cable based on more national HD the lack of those channels would certainly hurt your argument. It was in that light that my comment was made.

It depends on what their cable system was missing. If their cable system had no HD then most people would be overwhelmed by the ~70 basic channels that are there and would probably grant a pass on the four (perhaps with the hope that they would be added). And that is assuming they care about the four channels. (Disney XD and ESPNews are not top rated.) Show them the list of AMC, BBCA, TCM, History International, Investigation Discovery, etc and they could forgive not having ABC/Disney in HD. It still comes down to the channels the individual wants but what is more likely? DISH adding six channels or DirecTV adding 15? That and "free" pricing for all new subs (not just Ultimate/Premier) and one could have a compelling campaign.

If I were selling DISH I'd point out that they have added 25 non-PPV HD channels this year - 19 basic HD, Showtime West and five Platinum HD movie channels. If I were selling DirecTV I'd point to the 24/7 sports and cutting edge 3D channels. ABC/Disney probably would not get mentioned unless the mark (er potential customer) had young children.

Overwhelming people with numbers is what DirecTV has done. IMO, E* would have been better off keeping the number count within real terms (say AVSForum's count) and explained the difference. (Like D* does in their "look inside the numbers" ads.) E* has to automatically concede the sports fanatic subscriber, but without Disney and ABC Family D* can also argue E* isn't as good for young families either. Disney Channel is huge. I would put it up there with ESPN as the over all must have cable network. That Dish currently doesn't carry it in HD would be a huge setback if they wanted to do a channel vs channel comparison.
