One can have both. Plus RedZone for only $7 more per month. :D
(But I'm sure there are other things that you would be missing.)

You are absolutely correct. For some idiotic reason, I responded to one of your posts twice and thought they were two different posts. I apologize for my mistake.

I do agree with my general point, which others seem to acknowledge, that until recently AMC/Cablevision was the worst example if you wanted to blame DirecTV for not carrying a channel. They only were making deals with cable companies. This year Fios finally got AMC HD and more recently Dish Network did. These facts start to put AMC into the same category as nearly every other channel people here want in HD but DirecTV doesn't carry, but I do think they still deserve the benefit of doubt at least until the next late September/early October "festivus" we are supposed to get.

For the same reason that I'm giving DirecTV the benefit of the doubt when it comes to AMC, I do not give them the benefit of the doubt for other channels. The circumstantial evidence suggested Cablevision was unwilling to make deals with certain companies; with most of the other channels every provider/carrier seem to have deals but DirecTV. That points the suspicion at DirecTV not their alleged lambada partners.

Interesting word usage on DirecTV's Twitter site for both AMC and BBC America.

The AMC answer is being like that for several weeks. They are talking, talking, talking and they should be dancing now !

To add to that, from D*'s twitter feed:

We continue to work on adding additional HD programming but a date for adding G4 HD has not been set. 2:09 PM Aug 30th via Assistly in reply to virtualpj

I continue to believe the fact that the word "negotiations" is used for AMC and not the others shows greater intent, but that just my interpretation.

Yeah... my point was simply that the answer no longer seemed like they were doing the "Lambada", but rather just coming to an agreement regarding when it will launch.

Could simply be that the person doing the answers has decided to answer with an "optimistic" response instead of a negative one, and doesn't HAVE to mean anything. I'm hoping otherwise though...

Interesting response for G4 as well... may mean something, may not... :(

Not a problem. I suspect that we may have both caught each other on a bad day. I hope we can move forward and will be rewarded with new HD in the near future.

    Hi all,
Long time Lurker, first time poster here. I've been wanting to add my 2 cents to one of these threads for awhile now but never took that extra step to register.

I've been a long time customer of D* (7 or 8 years now) and I am at the closest point I've ever been to changing to Dish. I do not feel that D* caters to my demographic. I hate sports (all sports channels are blocked on my TV), I don't buy any PPV if I can help it (too expensive), I dont watch shopping channels (all blocked) and generally don't watch SD (anymore), I don't subscribe to HBO, Showtime, Starz, or any similar channels either and my internet connection is good for the rural area in which I live (Which is to say, not good enough to stream anything with video) so I don't use any of the internet connected stuff that are available to the D* HD DVR I use.

I work in the tech industry, I prefer to watch interesting things like science, discovery, history and when I want escapism I watch sci-fi, fantasy, and comedy type shows (no horror). I watch G4 a lot even though it's not in HD because it's the only channel that has news and escapist entertainment that's interesting to me.

It seems Dish has all the channels I want in HD and DirecTV isnt interested in getting those channels (instead they add stuff I have no interest in).

The big thing that's keeping me with directv is I'm a loyal customer. I tend to stay with a brand and I dont like to make big changes even if it means I'll save more money per month and get the HD channels I want. And... there is always that off chance D* will suddenly get the channels I want in HD as soon as I leave. (mainly BBCA and G4)

I've been trying to think of any pros or cons that would keep me with D* but I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

    Posted in another thread:

Sounds like HD Extra Pack channels are on the way.

(Edit: I just checked and DirecTV lists The HD Extra Pack under the Premiums drop down menu, so that might not be it. Though I don't know what else it could be.)

If you read his words carefully, it appears that the HD Extra package is indeed MOST LIKELY the case. That would leave the channels below the most likely candidates:

    1. Africa Channel
    2. Comedy.TV
    3. C-SPAN3
    4. Epix 1
    5. Epix 2
    6. ES.TV
    7. Fashion TV
    8. FearNet (October 1, 2010)
    9. Halogen
    10. Indieplex
    11. MavTV
    12. Movieplex
    13. MyDestination.TV
    14. NHK World TV
    15. Pets.TV
    16. Recipe.TV
    17. Retroplex
    18. Shorts HD
    19. Sony Pictures Movies HD (October 1, 2010)
    20. WealthTV
    21. World Fishing Network

Not normally one to say things like this, but its been one of THOSE days...

If a different providers offers you what you want, at a lower price, go for it.

Personally, I am a bit of a sports fan, will watch mostly soccer... but will watch baseball, college football, and NFL. I have Sunday Ticket now, but am likely to drop it when I call in. For me, the cost difference is small, and I'll likely pay more to switch to cable. Cable would be the preference because no rain fade.

So, I'm at a point where the Pareto Principle applied... 80 percent of what I want is available from all providers for similar price. Its just that I'll get a different 80 percent by changing.

If you can do better, God bless.

From what Satellite Racer said, it does not sound like we will be getting AMC or BBC soon, but other things.

    What do you think?

The Sony movie channels are what I've assumed we would get as soon as the latest "festivus" was teased. I've realized though that the Encore channels could technically be counted in the confusing "could be considered a Premium/could be considered a non-Premium" category since they are in the new "Choice Ultimate" package.

That thought occurred to me as well (re: Encore channels) though they would also be included in the Starz package as well, which seems to take those out of the realm of possibility... :)

As an HD Extra package subscriber, I'd welcome the Sony channels...

As a Total Choice Ultimate subscriber, I'd welcome the Encore channels...

That being said, any HD additions that are not AMC, BBC America, or (to a much lesser extent) TCM, will disappoint me at the same time.

The one thing going against the Sony channels is that Satelliteracer stated a timeframe putting it about square on the money for the launch date of those two particular channels, but then he said the next channels might POSSIBLY come sooner. :( Perhaps there will be multiple HD Extra Festivus(es)?

Indieplex? Retroplex? World Fishing Network? Epix 1? Epix 2?

One "pro" that helps to keep me with D* is the hope that the MPEG-4 DirecTiVo will become available soon, perhaps 1Q 2011. I'll get two when that happens.

Another "pro" is D*'s PQ, which is better than Dish's HD Lite.

I too have been a fairly long time customer (6 years now) but I am not thinking about changing to Dish. I don't hate sports, but I watch local teams only; I never buy PPV unless a free one is offered; of course I don't watch shopping channels (or religious channels) and generally don't watch SD anymore; I usually don't subscribe to HBO, Showtime or Starz; and my internet service is 1.5 Mbps and throttled, so I don't use my internet connection with D*.

Still I'm fairly happy with the HD channels I can get (even though I've never seen a full ep of Mad Men or Breaking Bad) and I get all my home-team football and baseball games in HD.

I continue to put up with the poor man's DVR that is the HR2x, patiently waiting for the TiVo.

Doubt you'll see anything Encore related. None of Encore's multiplex channels are available in HD. The only possibility would be Encore West Coast which is supposed to launch sometime this year.

Can you imagine if D* adds World Fishing Network?

This forum would go nuts. I have friends who like to fish who can't stand watching it on television.
