Its a standard business practice in the broadcast industry to negotiate agreements which contain assurance language for delivery timelines, with penalties for delays. For that reason - you simply can't do them years ahead of time as one poster suggested - too much risk.

As for the Travel Channel HD...naahhhh...they delayed that just to punish you for using their logo as an avatar all those months. ;):lol::lol:

So back on track here...August is now the next target month for the next festivus....wonder what we'll get???

While I'd love to see a big HD channel addtion knowing that DirecTV has now new satellite capacity coming online for another few years I'd prefer that they take their time and be careful on what they do add. Yes, I'd like to see BBCA and AMC added I'd prefer that they didn't add a channel like WFN just because it's there and keep some capacity open for a 'must have' channel that might come up before D14 goes up (like maybe the two new HD channels that Sony announced).

Again, there are only a few major channels left. There aren't enough channels (with anything approaching decent ratings) to have anything more than a small festivus. I have no insight into which channels could be added in the next round but the only top-tier channels missing in my mind are:

    E!
    TCM
    AMC
    BBCA
    G4

This is not a matter of opinion. I really could care less about E!, have been disappointed by BBCA and could happily ignore G4. AMC is useless for movies but has a few good shows and TCM is truly valuable.

Only getting 5-6 channels a few years ago would have been a tragedy but now it seems completely reasonable. Below the level of ratings above, I would tend to take a different perspective with HD channels. I would go back to the channel and offer to put up their HD feed when they agreed to take down their SD feed. It makes no sense for a ratings-starved channel to take up an SD slot and an HD slot. No, that will not be a quick process, but nobody (rational) is clamoring for Underwater Basketweaving HD right now.

It's my understanding that they actually need more capacity on western arc before they can add many more channels. But I could be wrong.

We're discussing that in a more appropriate forum (DISH forums). A new satellite at 61.5 doesn't help DISH on their main satellite arc where the bigger bandwidth crunch exists. This will help DISH in the eastern portion of the US but national channels need to be added to both "arcs". So despite the statements of DISH Network and positive comments in the media I don't expect to see a flood of HD on DISH for DirecTV to compete with.

But if DirecTV wants to compete with channels DISH doesn't have the room to add I have no problem with that. :)

That's not Swanni (Phillip Swan). The core of the article referenced is the Sunday Morning press release from DISH announcing the success of the Saturday satellite launch.

Count me in as a person who would like to have AMCHD, DIY-HD, and Nat Geo Wild in HD.

The Nat Geo Wild channel seems awesome - I just wish I could see it in HD quality.

Here's hoping to it getting added soon!

My hunch is more premiums in August since they are more likely to accept a tango dance.

Add TCMHD & FMCHD to this list and I'd be ecstatic! (AMC could be left SD to make space though, don't ever watch it)

"That list" was a growth list. Small/new channels are going to have an inherent growth potential advantage.

Here's a list AMC is on, the top 25 ratings for cable channels for June 28-July 4th (new one for last week isn't out yet). AMC is listed #5, and the new season of Mad Men and Breaking Bad hasn't even started yet.

    Thanks...good info.

That would seem to support it should be on the "next HD channels" list too. :D

It would seem the only thing left would be carriage agreements...and if its in the next group in August...that would pretty much have to be signed by now.

The trouble is that if DirecTV adds a channel they are adding it forever. Basing the channel add on the popularity of a couple of shows that won't be on the channel forever (all shows end their runs eventually) isn't a good thing. The promise of remaining popular needs to extend beyond the top shows.

That being said, #5 isn't bad but being #5 also makes the channel owner believe that they have something worth selling at a larger price. Perhaps too large a price. Channel owners need to be reasonable in their expectations.

That's been the reported problem with other carriers for AMC HD and other Rainbow HD channels.
