Granted, my DMA isn't huge, but Mediacom doesn't have a lot of the channels DirecTV has... though it does have a few that DirecTV doesn't...

HOWEVER, AMC has been in HD for SEVERAL years now... so I would include it in with the pathetically late channels...

Alan, what channels does your Mediacom have that D* doesn't? Here in Des Moines, it has a handful, and none that D* doesn't have.

Anyone look at the most popular downloads on iTunes and Amazon today? Mad Men takes 4 out of 5 top spots for HD TV seasons, Breaking Bad also in the mix, I would have to guess that there are more than a few 18-49s using iTunes and Amazon, conventional ratings aren't the only measure anymore.

Can we quit comparing DirecTV (a national service) to local cable channel lineups? Its way off topic IMO.

How is it WAY off topic?

Some places, DirecTV is behind in channels, some places, DirecTV's channel lineup is far superior.

In the areas in which it's lacking, it's because the cableco has channels that we are anticipating...

Well if your local cableco has HD channels you want that DirecTV doesn't have, why not switch?

Travel channel is great in HD. Never watched it in SD. Same thing with AMC, only watched the shows in Bluray/Amazon VOD. One of the reasons AMC ratings are not much higher is because most carriers only have it in SD. We watch the shows but we don't watch the channel and the sponsors also lose. I bet Travel ratings are getting higher.
Rainbow should NOT charge extra money for HD, they will get more viewership and more money from advertisers. Are you listening, Rainbow ? ;)

Well if you play your cards right you will become extremely over weight and be able to sue the travel chanell, win billions of dollars and be able to buy D*. Once you own it you can broadcast whatever chanells you want, sounds feasable.

Um no it takes two to tango as in you need a carriage contract for each HD channel. If they could just broadcast any HD channel they wanted this thread wouldn't exist.

I have a question about GOLTV HD, is hte channel gonna have dual audio ( english/spanish via SAP )? or 426 will be spanish and 620 english? cause all HD channels we have dont support SAP like HBO's STARZ's etc, how are they gonna do it? any idea? cause GOLTV is basically directed to a spanish population in the US

Actually... most carriers carry AMC HD.

Dish Network and DirecTV are some of the exceptions.... though they certainly have a healthy subscriber base. However, it's important to note that only a certain amount of those subscribers have HD and care about the lack of an HD option.

I can't answer for everybody, but I'll answer for myself:

    1. I can't receive Mediacom where I live (the boonies).
    2. Mediacom offers FOUR HD channels that DirecTV doesn't have... only TWO of which I care about, but is missing 52 HD channels that DirecTV offers.
    3. DirecTV offers me more channels at less money.
    4. DirecTV is FAR more reliable.
    5. I've been with DirecTV for 15 years, and though I've had complaints from time to time like a lack of a certain channel, they've all gone away with time. I see no reason to expect different now.

I may be disappointed that Dish Network or other providers currently offer channels that I'd really like to see on DirecTV, and I feel that it's my right to be disappointed by the lack of (insert channel here). However, I am VERY HAPPY with my DirecTV service and I have NO intention of switching in the forseeable or non-forseeable future.

Way off-topic for this thread, but the question was posed, so I'll bite...

Comcast recently launched the "Xfinity" rebranding in my area, and added 72 HD channels, for a legitimate total of more than 100. I tried it out, but despite more HD *quantity*, I returned the boxes to Comcast and decided to stick with DirecTV. Why?

    - DVR storage space. The latest and greatest Comcast DVRs only have 320GB hard drives, with no option to add additional storage. With all broadcasts still being MPEG2, that space fills up quickly!

    - HD picture quality. With three channels per quadrature, the HD picture quality is far inferior to DirecTV's. Any sort of rapid motion degrades into a pixelated mess, and it drove me crazy.

    - No remote DVR scheduling. I know some locations offer it, but I found out the hard way that my area has not yet been upgraded to the version of the guide that enables remote scheduling.

    - Guide. Speaking of the guide, the TV Guide software that Comcast runs is ancient and clunky compared to DirecTV's.

    - Multi-room viewing. Another "coming soon" feature that is going to be priced far higher than DirecTV's offering. Not available at all in my area currently.

Add it all up, and a few extra HD channels are not worth all the other sacrifices. I'll sit back and anxiously await the next "Festivus!"

    Oops. Thanks for the fix.

Anyway, G4 announced some big news at Comic-con last week. They will be getting four Japanese animated series based on Marvel characters next year starting with Iron Man. The others include X-Men, Wolverine, and Blade and they will all be broadcast in HD. I hope DirecTV gets on the ball and adds G4 HD before they start asking for more money. :p

Funny - I'm sure two or three have DirecTV.
