Sure some don't have HD by choice. That doesn't mean they "prefer" a soft blurry picture. The point, 100% of people prefer higher quality items.

Nicely put. AMC viewers will bring their wallets to the dance. This in turn could increase premium sales and ST sales.

SR referenced AMCHD in April. When asked why it wasn’t included in the DBSTALK HD poll, SR stated and I quote: “No need to find out about channels already in the queue to launch

The fact that we still don’t have AMCHD, perhaps this means it’s truly a capacity problem. Why not launch it now?

Well, that's a very good question right there. If I had caught the Breaking Bad bug (not yet; I actually try to avoid some shows I think I might like to watch someday if I have to watch them in SD now), I'd be very interested in that question. That "in the queue" language suggests the tango is already complete, but the terms are "not yet". Why? Dunno.

"In the que" could also mean that they want it and are working on getting it but there is no contract signed yet. Essentially they are still "tangoing". ;)

Well, only SR can tell us. Generally D* (and pretty much everyone engaged in a negotiation) likes to avoid giving the other fellow leverage by looking too eager. I can hear AMC negotiators saying "Oh, you already promised your most ardent subscribers we're coming? Wow, sucks to be you, huh? Let's talk about how reasonable our requests are again."

    Ummm...

TWC - 66 channels widely available, 74 limited.
Comcast - 29 channels widely available, 110 limited.

And don't forget FiOS (with 121 HD channels), which added 184,000 customers in Q2.

I don't know if one off quarter is a signal of anything, but lack of basic HD additions has to hit them at sometime.

Once Directv gave us ESPNU HD I really could care less what they add now. To me, its all icing on the cake--premiums, basic--whatever--

I think Directv is concentrating on their Sunday Ticket push right now! I mean, how happy are they that the lockout is over?!

But since this is an anticipation thread, there is a channel I think has to be in HD---Nat Geo Wild. It was made for HD. So if I have to anticipate anything, I hope we see it one day within the next year.

What people forget with cable is that those channels aren't available to everyone, and it is largely up to the local markets to decide how to upgrade their networks.

Yeah, my city has TWC. But I would have about 80 HD channels on my TWC if I were to subscribe to it again (I left it in 2010), because they simply haven't expanded their capacity enough to allow for more HD stations. It is WORSE in the areas that used to be Adelphia, as Adelphia really neglected the networks and ended up going bankrupt. Comcast and Time Warner Cable split the pie on that one.

Nah. The HD stations that 99% of customers watch most often, are available to pretty much all cable, satellite, or telco outlets. The channels that are left, are not a compelling enough reason to leave.

There are many other factors in play: The hassle of having to change provider. Features like "whole house DVR" which not all providers have. Having to learn new equipment, and also not unimportant: Convincing the wife that learning this new system is really in the best interest of the family, because now daddy can watch AMC HD!

I think we pretty much have reached a saturation point. People that would switch over a few basic HD stations, would have done so already a LONG time ago.

People are switching mostly because they can get a better deal with the other provider, they aren't switching over the lack of AMC HD or other basic HD channels. This forum is proof of it too: Even among the most hardcore HD freaks, switching providers for an HD station that DirecTV currently doesn't carry..... is simply too much effort and hassle. People don't want to bother, and rather wait another 2 years till the D14 launch, then to switch now.

    Correct.

The important thing you are forgetting though with IPTV.... is that they have no choice. :D

A U-Verse HD channel is about 5.7 Mbps. If they were to broadcast a 100 HD channels AT THE SAME TIME, they would need to bring 570 Mbps to each and every house. With the whole 134 HD channels they haven, plus the 200-odd SD channels and whatever they have in premiums/sports, if they DID NOT have a system that only transfers what is requested, they pretty much would need a 1 Gbps pipe to every house.

They can barely break 30 Mbps on that copper. They really have no other choice then to do it that way. :D

I'm not calling you a "whiner", I just asking.
Didn't you post once if you got Travel Channel HD that's all you would ever ask for? Or am I mis-remembering?:D

I honestly don't know. I remember saying I'd lick the bird turds off my sat dish. I highly doubt I said I only wanted one channel in HD.

If FiOS were available a few months ago when I was looking to upgrade my hardware (they're still slowly finishing their roll-out around here), I would have switched. No doubt about it (would have bundled phone and internet service as well though). But since my choice was between D* and Dish just for tv, you're absolutely right. The hassle of switching just isn't worth it for a couple channels. Plus DirecTV gave me enough freebies to stay for a couple more years at least.

I'm pretty happy with DirecTV, but if they were to add AMCHD, BBCA HD, IFCHD and one or two others, there wouldn't be much of a reason for me to ever look elsewhere when my contract's up. As it stands now, I'm just waiting for FiOS.

Scott wasn't a part of TECTV. You're thinking of a man name of Goldman. He also was on CNBC for a while.
