It's not like Chase Carey was running DirecTV into the ground, so it's more like the new direction hasn't managed to screw up the good thing that Chase Carey got going. Saying that it's "paid off" implies to me that it made things better, which it really hasn't. It's just kept things the way they were, which was great.

Not implying Chase Carey did anything wrong. He had a working formula. Just saying Mike White changed direction when he took command and his change of direction is working from a buisness perspective.

To some, the reverse seems true...DirecTV can do no wrong.

Oh I agree. But as we both know we do not live in a perfect world. The timing of the downloading of 0x4a8 to the HR24 series a couple of days ago is proof of that. ;)

Give Hoosier205 a few minutes. He’ll somehow imply the download was DISH Network’s fault.

    Just joking H205. ;)

Bring on one new basic HD channel please. Show the basic peeps you still love us and care about our $100 a month.

I actually think this thread needs H205. We need both sides of the spectrum in this thread. H205 knows I wasn’t serious. If I had a dime for every time I was called a whiner, I’d take all that money and add AMCHD myself.

Got it. I agree with that, even though I don't agree with the direction over the long term.

I agree Jeremy I don't believe Mike White has necessarily made Directv better. I would much rather have Carey back and let Mike White go back to selling Pepsi and Fritos! :)

I agree, but Chase Carey isn't coming back to DirecTV. He's in line to become the first CEO of News Corp. who isn't named Rupert Murdoch. And as long as DirecTV keeps performing well from a business perspective, Mike White isn't going anywhere anytime soon either.

I think something a lot of people lack, not just on this site but in general, is the ability to separate the business itself from how you feel about it. Anybody who would argue that DirecTV hasn't been doing extremely well under Mike White from a business perspective is a fool, period. But that doesn't mean everyone necessarily agrees with the direction the company is headed. I certainly don't like the way things are run over at Apple, but that hasn't stopped me from making very good money on AAPL stock.

Not sure if it’s been posted yet. We can now stream Mad Men in HD on Netflix. Since we’re stuck with AMC SD-lite on DIRECTV.

Oh they love your $100 a month, and the $10 profit it brings. (completely guessed, unsubstantiated number for example purposes)

Question is.... why should they make only $9 in profits by adding more HD channels, if they can make $10 in profits. :D

Yeah, I want me some BBC America HD. But I got the feeling that ain't happening this year.

I know you just guessed at it, but using the latest numbers, it's almost double that. And that's including all expenses, not just programming.
The question isn't quite that simple. There is an increase in costs, but they have to examine how it will affect other metrics. Revenue, churn, etc. If things were really that simple, it would be impossible to ever justify an increase in costs. :)

Yup, 100% agree with you. Hence why we’re not seeing new basics in HD.

Yeah I agree Jeremy. I realize Carey isn't coming back and Mike White probably isn't leaving for a while anyway. Just because I disagree to some extent with the direction Mike White is going doesn't necessarily mean I want to change providers. Having said that overall I still enjoy my Directv, even though I still have numerous basic HD channels that I want Directv to add!
