ugh after looking into it, it's 2 months free but I'd have to sub for 4 months. Eh... I'll wait. Already spend enough money on TV with one provider. If DirecTV doesn't offer the HD, usually there's an HD rip online to download.

DirecTV isn't bad... Just wish they had a few more HD basics. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the service. 10 or more new HD though could go a long way.

When there are 10-12 more quarters until the next infusion of bandwidth is anticipated to turn up (Summer of 2014?) and only a few empty slots left, one per quarter isn't doable without a significant change in the way things are being done. You don't even need to contemplate carriage agreements and profitability to understand how the fundamental physics must play out.

If bandwidth is truly a problem, and many here believe it is not, DirecTV has ways to counter that. For one thing, do they really need all those duplicate PPV channels of the same movie? If they cut down one duplicate for each HD 1080p, for example, they'd free up enough bandwidth to launch one channel per quarter. With DVRs and even VOD, I seriously doubt reducing the number of PPV duplicates would even be noticed by customers, and if so, wouldn't even generate complaints.

The complete article that I linked to in my original post also discusses their ratings growth.

I saw that but it didn't really cite numbers saying that they'd had their strongest quarter ever but didn't give any numbers. The channels figures have been so horrid for the past few years that it wasn't hard for them to record their best season.

Now the question is faced without any Doctor Who for most of 2012 how will their figures fare :)

Last week my UK torrents provided me with so many hours that I couldn't watch them all but apart from the morning news there was nothing on BBCA that I watched

Isn't the PPV needed for NFL ST on a Sunday afternoon?

This wait seems to be getting longer and longer as each quarter passes. I'm hoping D* steps up to the plate in the next 2+ years, before the new satellites are launched, and gets us at least 5-10 new basic HD channels. I don't understand what they're waiting for.

I've often thought the same thing. Back in the pre-DVR days I could understand why they would have the same movie on 4 or 5 PPV channels with showings starting every 30 minutes to make it easier for the customer to find a good viewing time. But nowadays, I wonder how many PPVs are actually watched "live" vs. being recorded and watched later. I'm sure they could cut the duplicate channels down so the new release movies are shown every 60 minutes instead of every 30 without adversely affecting non-DVR customers. That would seem to give them a little more free bandwidth for adding new basic HD channels, and they could still pull down the remaining PPV on the 17 Sunday afternoons for sunday ticket - I'm sure their bottom line wouldn't be affected much.

The premise of your argument is incorrect.

I would bet that if every hard core Dr. Who fan currently subscribing to D* cancelled it wouldn't even make ripple in the numbers. I doubt that anyone that I know (other than the people in my IT department) has even heard of Dr. Who. I first heard of it watching Extras.

I anticipate that we're done for 2011, and the next new add will come from either any renewal negotiations for contracts ending Dec 31, or the annual rite of the yearly rate bump.

Verizon just added E! HD to their FiOS lineup (Channel 696). Being that E! was able to negotiate to be carried in HD on FiOS, I hope that one day they can also get carriage rights on DirecTV.
