Was able to confirm some of the theories today. Cinema 125-130 (6) seem to be the permanent Cinema and/or future replacement candidates. While 138-158 (21) is the shared HD bandwidth. Was interesting to see MLB HD Mix taken down but appears to more be a technical issue with both NFL and MLB Mix at the same time.

Here's a view of the bandwidth movement today:

Someone on another site said they talked to a supervisor at DirecTV about the MLB-EI mix channel being down. They were told it was an issue with the server that does the mix channel that caused it, not bandwidth, and that both the NFL and MLB mix channels will be up next week. Take it for what it's worth, IMHO just need to wait until next week to see if it was a server problem or bandwidth.

It's not overall HD bandwidth. There were 6 Cinema HD available that were not touched. And the 1 Versus HD slot (now Cinema HD) was also available.

The HD Mix channels are usually on D11 transponder 1 slot 1F00. Today, NFL HD Mix is using the MLB HD Mix slot. It does seem like it has more to do with Mix technology (servers) rather then HD channel / transponder bandwidth.

maybe it's your wording but I'm confused
are you saying 125-130 are candidates to be switched off for national HD channels if D* ever got the green light to add more HD or are those channels having to be turned off on Sundays and no national HD can be added?

Those 6 are the "permanent" PPV channels that could, theoretically at least, be used to add more HD if Directv chooses to do so. The remainder of the PPV slots are necessary for the part-time NFL Sunday Ticket bandwidth.

When they re-numbered the Cinema HD channels a few months ago, they created two groupings: 125-130 and 138-158. At the time, I thought that the first grouping was either permanent (never going away), or just the remaining Cinema HD that eventually would be replaced with new HD nationals one-by-one over time.

The new 125-130 Cinema HD channels are the old 130-150 PPV HD channels, that were slowly being replaced over the past year with new national HD channels. So either they'd continue to be replaced, or maybe they'd just be permanent. Still don't know for sure, but it was clear today that 125-130 still haven't been touched for any part-time HD needs.

It also seemed curious that the 2nd set (138-158) were separate, separated by 7 channel numbers, and the thought was that 138-158 are the "shared" HD bandwidth, and today that was clearly proven.

Now, next week should be the real test, because 2 more NFL HD channels will be needed. That will be the maximum NFL needed for 2009, because then the NFL bye weeks start to kick in until the last week of the season in 2010. There were still a few available slots in the 138-158 range today.

By-the-way, the guide also shows 125-130 as not being touched next Sunday.

It's been interesting to track, and today demonstrated some theories (so far).

Sorry if this is the wrong forum since it's not an HD question, but you seem like you might be able to help out more than the Directv techs I've spoken with on the phone so far. ;)

I'm not able to get any of the La Liga matches on 456-459. Channel 459 shows up in my guide, but not the other ones which are the ones that are actually showing matches. I'm also not getting Fox Sports Espanol which is part of the Sports Pak that I subscibe to. Someone on another thread thinks it might be because I have the wrong dish, Slimline-3S(SWM), and I need one that is able to pick up the Spanish-language channels. Is there anything with the satellite or transponders or something that might answer this?

My first guess would be that the international channels that you want are at the 110° or 119° satellite location which is not accessible with the Slim3 dish, but just looked in the table (from another thread) and it looks like those channels are at 101°, unless it has changed. The data is from 8/15. I just looked and they are in my guide.

Have updated post#2 with the latest bandwidth analysis. Today was a great day for collecting data with NFL Sunday Ticket allocated. Checked several times during the day.

The first change is that the replacement candidate number is now 7. It's really 6 and whatever gets decided for the old Versus HD slot. As posted earlier today, the 6 are Cinema 125-130. They haven't been used for part-time HD (yet). The other 21 are absolutely needed and could not be replaced. Still need to see if later in the NFL season anything new/special comes up that requires more part-time HD on a Sunday.

The open number is now 5, but I really need to keep digging into it. 1 is on the D11 transponder 1 which is used for special event mix channels and it certainly seems like they don't like to fill that transponder, because they never share it with Cinema HD. Been analyzing the other 4 and just discovered an interesting coincidence that there are 4 special NFL 99xx channels allocated (9951, 9952, 9953, 9954) on those same transponders! I'm starting to think they're related to either the Mix channel or the NFL player tracker and maybe that bandwidth isn't so free after all :). I need to study this some more.

The net, for all intents and purposes, is that D10/D11 is full, or mostly full. Been fun to try to figure this out. Enjoy.

Do the hotpass channels have any bearing on bandwidth need when NFL and a race are on at the same time, like this coming Sunday? Thanks for all the info!

Yes, they all come from the same pool of HD bandwidth. HotPass usually uses Cinema 144-147.

I wonder if they might also be using a higher bitrate for the channels on those tps being sports channels with more motion they could definitely benefit from it.

Yep, was thinking the same but the 14-17 NFL channels are spread across many transponders, and the 4 with these special 995x channels clearly state Sunday Ticket in the transponder data.

They did rearrange 8 channels last week, which I assume was to balance bandwidth prior to Sunday.

If P. Smith is still out there :))), any thoughts on D11 TP 2,4,10,11? They look like each has 1 open slot.

Also wonder if the Mix channels are special in some way that they require more bandwidth. They need 8 audio streams, but figured that wasn't much bandwidth, and that the video was just 1 HD channel created before uplinked, but probably with alot more motion on the 8 segments of the screen. They also have 92xx channels on the same transponders as any channel that is part of a Mix channel, such as ESPN and Tennis which have 9209 and 9217 respectively (used during the US Open).

Would love for any feedback or ideas. Been somewhat in a vacuum looking at this stuff for a while, with most of it figured out.

Since Fox is 720p vs CBS at 1080i maybe they're balancing those two networks across the NFL-ST/SF transponders to help spread the load?

Hey RAD and evan_s ... Hmmm ...you guys may actually be on to something!

There were twelve games. And they were ALL on the transponders that I was wondering about, but didn't realize it until your comments.

    706 was on D10 TP14, which has always been light. And the rest were on D11 TP 2 (707/708/709), 4 (704/705/712), 6 (713), and 10 (710/711/714/715).

Hmmm. Coincedence ... I doubt that. Interesting, very interesting. That's also were the four 99xx channels are.

And TP6 had only 1 NFL channel, but does have two other Cinema HD slots not used this week. Guess may be that the two extra channels next week will be there on TP6.

So maybe they need those transponders to have a little extra room.

Now that the light bulb has gone off :))), and after re-analyzing the data collected from yesterday (first weekend of NFL Sunday Ticket), and also re-looking back at the past few months (with channel movement for special events and nightly part-time HD) ...

There have always been several transponders that appeared to have "open" slots, but it was puzzling that they weren't being used for Cinema HD or new national HD channels. Why waste bandwidth?

Well, now it seems to be a fairly good assumption that transponders with multiple Cinema HD channels only use 4 slots, instead of the usual 5, so as to provide "expansion" bandwidth for any and all special events and sports needs. It's now overly obvious :) that every "curious" transponder has 3 or 4 Cinema HD channels, or all sports channels.

Have now updated the bandwidth analysis in post#2 to show 0 open D10/D11 slots, which now matches their use over the past year since D11 was launched.

Still show 6 replacement candidates and will continue to monitor their non-use during future Sunday's during the NFL season.
