Are you serious? Have you never tried this before? You're missing out! I guarantee you that every phone CSR in the world has an entire script they're REQUIRED to read to a customer who's canceling BEFORE they ever hit the "Delete" key. That script includes enticements to keep the customer on, just like the $100 discount for the DirecTV HD DVR. I've done this a lot, and not once - EVER - has a CSR just said, "Ok, you're canceled."

And BTW, you're definitely NOT a lawyer. There's absolutely nothing fraudulent about it

OMG! Are you SERIOUS? You've got to be joking!!!

You think some CSR at DirecTV cares sooo much about their job that they're going to track me down and teach me a lesson?!?!?!?!?

    HA!

...mindless drones you are... go ahead and throw away your money. It doesn't affect me at all. I already saved my $100!

A CSR, no. The Signal Integrity Department. Perhaps.

I posted this on another satellite TV board and got this reply:

"Last November I had installation problems. I didn't exactly threaten to quit, but I did ask the retention folks: "I have a 2-year commitment. At what point is my commitment voided by DirecTV's failure to deliver a competent installation?"

The retention line escalated with promise to call back. When I described my experience they offered the DVR free, with 3 months' free DVR service. That is on top of the previous bones they tossed me earlier that month: 6 months' free Showtime and 6 months' free HD.

Regarding DSL: most providers will give the "new customer" introductory rate at any time, but you have to call and ask for it. It is fairly common. I've had cable guys say the same thing: when the introductory rate expires, call and ask for the current lowest rate and you'll get it.

Granted, asking for a DVR is hardware with fixed expense. Free/discounted service cuts their margin but doesn't hit capital expense budgets."

All this guy did was stand up for his rights as a consumer and demand the best deal for the situation.

I'm telling you people, you're missing out if you don't at least try!

Asking for a deal as a current customer is a whole different ball game compared to threating to cancel and/or signing up (again) using altered information.

    Ethics, principals, etc.

What I do feel, and assume that most here will as well is that there should be standardization. Some serious standardization as far as upgrade offers/programming promos.

Been with D* for x long with programming of $Z, your entitled to Y
    etc.

For your first day with the forum, you're sure making yourself known.
Threatening to cancel, as Earl warns, is something you do at your own risk. D* has something like 16 million customers & all it would take is one CSR having a bad day dealing with jerks to....
FWIW: I only read this thread, after it was PM'd to me by a D* CSR.
There are many ways to deal with others, you have shown one way, that deceit on your part got something must less than I did being honest, forceful maybe, & definitely persistent. Everyones mileage will vary and how or what they do truly defines the type of person they are.

If you read some more of the forum, you might find we're more than mindless drones here.
I'd say you're starting off as a new member on not your best foot. :)

Throwing money away? Hmmm ... I've received things after discussions with the CSRs. So I wouldn't say that I'm throwing money away.

Let's just say you have a business. You have some clients who use different first names, etc. to get the "new customer" discount. All of a sudden, you notice that you're not getting any retention customers and end up going out of business. I imagine you find that the customers were perfectly in the right to do this to you, correct?

Unfortunately, the "I can do it if Johnny did" is not okay. It is fraud and is punishable by law in every state.

    Broken...
Oh, well, too bad. If you HAD a HR10 on your account, you can get an upgrade to an HR20 for $99... AND you can keep your HR10!

BTW, D* and TiVo signed an extension to theri support agreement last year, extending it for 3 years... that puts D* TiVo support (for DVR service and software upgrades) to, um... let me see... oh, yes! 2009!

I just can't agree with your way of thinking. First you say threaten to cancel, then you say to lie and cheat, then you change your name spelling to get what you want. I have been reading and posting in the forums for awhile now, and your reasoning is completely baffling to me. I know that some us do not always get the deals we want. But at least we are honest about it and keep on trying. Eventually we do get the deals. It just takes a little longer to arrive at our goal. But the most important and rewarding experience is coming here to the boards and getting help from one another. I just can't see how learning to be a little or allot dishonest is actually going to help me work out the bugs of a H20, HR20 H10, 611, 322, 622 or figure out if I have a bad receiver or dish. The Moderators do everything in there power to get info from Dish or Direct to find out about updates and service. I am sorry but my reason for being in the forum is not for your reasons.

All you really had to do was ask to retention and politely ask them for an upgrade to an HR20 for the $199 price. When I got mine I just asked nicely told them I have been a loyal customer since 1998 and asked what they could do for me.

Viola!! They said they would upgrade me for free. No yelling, no threatning, no aggravation. Just ask nicely.

My mother always said you catch more bees with honey than vinegar and guess what? She was RIGHT!!

Anyway glad you got it for $199. Maybe next time you'll get a better deal if you play nice.

Apparently you you don't understand. Also your research skills could use some brushing-up:

    1. DirecTV will NOT buy Dish. That was tried a few years ago and shot down by the FCC. No reason to believe it would be any different now.

    2. Dish actually has MORE HD channels then DirecTV right now with all the old VOOM channels. Of course DirecTV should have more then Dish by the end of this year but as of right now Dish has more.

    3. Cable can carry as many HD channels as satellite depending on the infrastructure of the cable. Besides they don't have to carry ALL the local HD stations like DirecTV so that helps their bandwidth.

    4. You forgot to add broadcast network stations to your list of HD providers, who provide their service to you free of charge.

DirecTV does not have a monopoly on TV nor on HD transmission in any area of the country. If you don't like their business practices then find another company that you do like. However I highly doubt you will find any company that doesn't offer a discount to new customers to get them to join.

You think a false threat to cancel your service is something the SI department cares about? That has absolutely nothing to do with the integrity of the signal.

By the way... I was in Circuit city yesterday and they had some HR-20's for sale for 299 and a 100 dollar rebate. So if you happened to look around a little you could have saved yourself a whole lot of screaming!

I have to laugh at this too, but none of this would make any difference if the postings were the same. I don't know if it's attitude or perspective that would have to change, but something does [I think].
The forum welcomes all people, so since "big novak" is new, and this was his first day, I'd like to offer him a chance to use his "other foot" as he did this before he came here and hope he will stay, ask questions & get the help he needs to not have to do what he did to get what he wanted. As has been posted, he could have gotten a better deal had he known what we could do to help him.

So I offer a "clean slate" or "one free pass" to Mr. big novak, to see what he wants to do next, here on the forum. :)

I ordered my upgrade (HR-20 and 5 LNB dish) on April 16th and it was installed on April 18th. When I called, the CSR said the price was $299. All I said was, "Really, that's the price?" She replied, 'Yes, but I can give you a $100 discount directly on your bill". Done! No raised blood pressure or devious tactics.

I don't see what the big deal is here (regarding this deal). Last weekend I went into my account on the Web site and clicked on 'Updgrade Equipment' and one of my options was $100 off the HD DVR with free installation. So I signed up. I didn't have to call and complain or threaten to leave. They presented it as an option to me without doing anything. I am having it installed this weekend.

Right, the offer is now on my account also, and I will probably be taking advantage of it for a second HR20 soon. I got my first one for next to nothing last fall, with no tricks whatsoever.

All this deception for $100. What's scary is, what would Big Novak do for $1000????
