The informal channels (insiders participating here) are doing a good enough job for me, hence I voted "no thanks".

What insiders are participating here? I assume you mean DirecTV employees? How can you be sure they work there and more importantly are actually involved in the areas they're speaking/writing about

Let's just say I have a trusting heart.:) They are here, and yes I mean D* employees. In addition we have others who are "plugged in" in less formal ways that are doing a perfectly adequate job for me.

...and the proof is in the pudding. I don't find a lack of quality information between the CE and Q&A forums. It (info quality) exceeds any I have had access to for any other consumer grade electronics device I own.

So, I'm happy with it. I didn't respond to the poll to argue. You asked for a response, I gave you one and why. If you aren't comfortable with the "alleged" sources, I wish you luck in getting better ones. Let us know how you make out.:)

I wasn't arguing...was just asking about your mysterious sources...if there's more information on the HR-20 to be had here it might be of interest to others. These sources give you any stock tips? :)

More DirecTV interaction here would be of great interest to me and some others it appears and probably a very nice "feature" for dbstalk.com. I'm sure you won't have to depend on me to report back to you on how it turns out.

We are getting better information from people here than on the DirecTV forums on DTV's website. Earl and others (the CE Echelon) have been consistently helpful and provide us with outstanding information.

What information are you not getting?

Charlie Chat?!?! What a joke. It usually turns into a sales pitch for new programming. There is also a Tech Chat, but that turns into ... "That's not supported", or "That will be supported in the next TBD release".

My point is I'm not sure what DirecTV COULD say that would be helpful to us.

I would love for someone from DIRECTV to interact with us, even in a one-time-only setting, but I think we'd have to be prepared for a lot of non-committal or vague answers. Every public utterance from DIRECTV can have ripple effects ... whether it's on stock prices, or just public perception, so they have to answer in a way that doesn't negatively impact either of those. For instance, if asked point blank "when will we have X?", if DIRECTV does not have a firm date, don't expect to here anything more than, "soon". Imagine if they gave a date and didn't meet it? DIRECTV also doesn't want to give away information that competitors can take advantage of, such as new features on the horizon, or again, product/service delivery dates.

A product manager could let us know what features are being considered for addition and maybe what is not. What bugs they've been able to replicate and what they don't know about....things like that would be nice.

I'm abstaining from the vote because I really don't think that any DIRECTV employee could give us more info than we already get.

However, if a DIRECTV person wants to go public here, I hope he or she chooses a highly moderated thread, where the understanding is, there's no "ganging up" allowed, and everyone involved tries to keep a positive attitude instead of just pelting the person with complaints.

I have a hard time believing that D* would let some of their employees or developers talk openly with the hoi polloi about products or services in development. I've yet to see a corporation that would sanction something like that.

Looking at the individual votes, we have an interesting group that think they get everything they need already. Humm. No interest in getting any further info.

So you're not voting. No D* employee could provide any more info than our gifted profits. Yet, if one could, it should be heavily moderated and handled in a positive manner.

Well you've got me on that one. No one could provide more info, but if someone could, we should protect them.. Do I have that right? :icon_stup

Note to self, I really need to find out who's got the key to the kool aid closet here. !pepsi!

For the life of me I cannot see how getting info directly from D* could at all be bad. But it seems many of you believe it is.

i voted yes. but... would rather see it as a suggestion box, that they maybe able to have comments on freely. the real tech stuff that Earl and Tom has been providing. i feel has been working fine. it's already being heavily being Moderated. which prevent errors being made public to soon.

now maybe once a month our suggestions that isn't repeated could have a comment on. in the process of making our suggestion, we could set up a vote on the most requested (limited to the top 25) answer's that's being seek.

the worst i could see from this would be? while were waiting for our next ce. we could have something to do.

I can't believe it's coming up on one year!

I bet you guys can make your own Status Update by just going WAY back to some of the origional software threads and posting a few of the issues from the beginning and looking at the ones now.

+1 I voted no, but I do like your idea however. Maybe D* could have a tech visit it every so often etc. Didn't E* do this with one of their receivers too?!! (Highly Moderated thread). I hate E* but I did think that was a good idea.

About the only person that some of us would want to listen to or believe would be Earl's inside contact(s). And I think we get enough good info from him thru Earl. I just think you'll get alot of business speak from someone else(ie "We're not allowed to talk about that/this/the other thing"). So what's the point. There was a recent thread, I can't remember the topic, that someone talked to a D* manager and what he said was completely wrong. man I wish I could remember what it was about But even Earl said that he would like to talk to that manager.

So would it be nice to talk/listen to a D* employee? Sure. Would I change my schedule around to be in the chat or whatever it is. Most likely not.

PS Didn't you get the kool-aid delivered with your HR-20? :D Or maybe that only came with the -700's. :p

Information is always good. I'm afraid that it will become a negative experience if this person is attacked, and we'll get no information out of having him or her here, just bad feelings all around.

By the way, the Kool-Aid is delicious, it's grape, my favorite!

I'd love to see that person (or persons) be given the corporate go-ahead to come on this board and answer come questions. Knowing that thay can respond with a "I can't say anything on that" answer.

I would. Not with any specific questions, but just to learn.

That's gotta be it. I thought something was missing from the box. :)
