I have a separate dish to set up while tailgating. It's a 3-LNB (18" x 20") on a tripod. In the past I had a single LNB and it worked great, just no local channels. I purchased the 3LNB model because the description said I would get local channels with it in my city (Lafayette, LA). I did a trial run today and my signal is 99% but no local channels. Is there anything I can do to receive the local channels on this dish?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks

Perhaps you are in am MPEG4 market that needs an HD dish to get local channels

List your DMA here and I am sure someone can tell you what setup you will need to get the channels. Some markets are still on 110 and 119 I believe so it is possible you need a 5-lnb to get the desired channels. Let us know and we will try to help.

Another thing to note would be if the place you are tailgating is it is possible in a different DMA. If that is the case then your channels would probably not work unless the spot beam was strong enough where you were at. Not saying that is what is happening because it is possible its all the same stations but am saying it could be an issue. If no one replies soon with an update I will try to look more into this for you.

I'm assuming that you are still in the Lafayette spot beam when tail-gaiting, and that you get the LIL's on your receiver when at home.

DirecTV broadcasts both SD & HD LIL's (edit: in Lafayette), The major 4 networks and PBS in SD/HD, and additionally CW & MNT in SD, so you should get SD LIL's with a 101°/110°/119° 3LNB.
Are you getting readings on ALL sats?
It's real easy to lock on 110° rather than 101°... or

Did you change the dish settings in setup to the 18"x20" 3LNB dish?
If you chose the 99°/101°/103° 3LB (SlimLine) in the setup, the only sat you will pick up will be 101°, and if your LIL's are broadcast on 110° or 119°, you won't get them.... finally

make sure you have the LIL channels listed in your guide, if you have a custom guide, and verify they appear in the "channels I get" guide.

    First link is the wrong one, and should be for Gary Toma's regularly updated transponder maps here;

    http://www.dbstalk.com/topic/200951-transponder-maps-domestic-latinam-new-data-942013/

Anyhow, Lafayette, LA. is DMA 124, DIRECTV Market ID of 104.

SD locals are on 119 transponders 23 and 29

Footprint map would therefore be for D7S here; http://www.dbstalk.com/topic/184044-interactive-beam-footprint-library/?p=2722046

    Check out spotbeam SC34.

you will need the Google Earth app to view it.

I think 110 is only used for Puerto Rico now.

What is the zip code where you are tailgating? You may be out of the spot beam.

Are you in OTA range of the stations you're trying to receive?

So the OP needs the 5-LNB then, correct?

I got it! It turns out that I'm a dumb arse! 3lnb setup works fine. I didn't have my tilt and azimuth correct so I was missing a satellite. Thanks for all your help everyone!

My question comes down to dish aiming and dish type setting. The Phase III is harder to aim than the 18" round dish, make sure you are setting the tilt properly and using a meter to read the 119 satellite. Also make sure you are selecting the Phase III dish, non the Slimline-3.

Actually I should back up, does the back of the dish say "Slimline?" Because if so, that's a Slimline-3 and won't get you your locals.

I tend to tell people not to get the Phase III dish, the Slimline-5 isn't that much more money and it's future-proof.

I guess not if the OP only wants SD service for tailgating and prefers the smaller P.III for greater portability.

I really don't know why DIRECTV keeps the P.III around nowadays.

It was obviously necessary in the era before the P.IV AT-9 and now AU-9 Slimline Ka/Ku dishes and since all new dish installations are done with the 2" O.D. mast anyway, SD only customers needing 119 should simply have a SL-5 installed.
