    You are kidding right?

Still ongoing is Time Warner & NFL network. Have you forgotten Time Warner & Big 10 Network? Or that Time Warner and Disney came >.< that close to dropping the entire Disney/ABC/ESPN suite of channels just a few short months ago this past August?

If there was real universal competition among providers instead of virtual monopolies D* wouldn't be able to sneer Mr. Potter-like at their customers in this way. Where I live, there's zero cable, no U-Verse or any other alternative besides Dish, plus given the investment of cash D* has forced me into for their lousy hardware, it puts me at an economic hardship to just throw it off a cliff, though I have been sorely tempted to do just that lo these many post-Tivo years.

You city guys with all your cable alternatives have all the leverage. Us country mice get screwed every time.

No I haven't. But overall cable hasn't dropped as many channels as E* has. ;)
They have "joint ventures" in it.

The loss of Versus last year. The lack of BBCA HD, AMC HD. The lack of CSPAN-3 (any D).

And how does this prove DirecTV is cheap?

Perhaps some of you complaining the loudest need to really understand how much these providers are asking per subscriber. And then another reach into the wallet for the HD feed. The fees are not trivial, especially when multiplied by 18 million. All of a sudden every penny matters.

Sounds to me like DirecTV is trying to hold the line against extreme carriage fees.

It would be nice to see a published chart showing what all the providers are charging per subscriber. That would be interesting reading.

What a farce. Versus was very short term. Virtually irrelevant.

So let's get real with some facts and compare:

    DISH -

TOTAL DROP of all the VOOM Channels, Disney Channel HD, Disney XD HD, ABC Family HD and ESPNews HD

TEMP DROP of FOX this year

    DROP of some HD LILs...

No SUNDAY TICKET and EQUAL RSN's on Dish

In a real comparison....its not even close....Dish loses.

P.S....the Golf Channel is still in negotiations until 12/31.

Definetly also I'd like to see the ratings for each channel throughout the year because Golf Channel and Versus have down periods in the ratings when nothing is on and when something is on they have up periods.

Sorry, that's not proof. I asked you to prove your allegation. You have so far not done so. In order to prove that which you claim, you will need to reference the actual costs involved here. Only then will you be able to prove your assertion that DirecTV is being cheap.

Many of us are concerned about this merger, but based on this recent article, hopefully it won't be as bad as we fear [link]. Sounds like they are building some conditions into the approval, so they can't withhold content.

I question the need for some of these chanels that don't really have enough programming to fill up a year round schedule. Especially in the sports area we're seeing more and more fragmentation of the events. It drives up revenue for the teams and channel owners, but all that money is being vacuumed out of our pockets.

Good point but I dont want ESPN monopolizing everything this is why I like in a way to see players like the Golf Channel and others get into the sports realm to keep competition alive.

I just hope I don't have to add Comcast to my Directv stuff just to get The Golf Channel.

I wonder what that would cost to get The Basic Package from Comcast that includes The Golf Channel?

    Guys,
None of this stuff ever happened with DirecTV back in the old days when they were part of Hughes. Some strange stuff is going on with DirecTV management's philosophy.

I'm thinking that The Golf Channel attracts just the type of customer D* salivates over. Losing TGC could cost D* a good number of very desirable clients.

None of the networks and other content providers looked to become cash cows from retransmission carriage agreements back then either.

Its a new different world that DirecTv and others have to deal with, and one that may get perhaps worse.

Ding Ding Ding this is the post of the year and if there is no Golf Channel on January 6th when the first PGA Tour event of the season happens then they will be losing subscribers left and right.

+1. They are the Cream of The Crop and usually have High Incomes and can afford to spend a lot of money on their Pursuits. It would be economic suicide on a small scale for Directv to lose this Customer Base but I just think they are Posturing!!!
