Is the operating system on the HR24/500 model linux based?

Probably based on a very old version of linux. Probably heavily modified. Only thing I know for certain is that it uses the standard XFS file system in real time mode - disks can be copied with Linux/XFS (gparted).

Having recently copied a drive it also appears that there is Java too.

Connect eSATA drive, give it a few minutes to run, then check system log files and you'll find what version of Linux it's using.
