    Today, DirecTV celebrates its eighth anniversary, another milestone for the company and the satellite TV business.

    Since its debut at Cowboy Maloney's in Mississippi in 1994, DirecTV has become the third largest provider of multichannel services - with more than 10.5 million customers. Today, one out of every 10 TV homes in the country receives DirecTV programming.

    Since its debut, DirecTV has activated more than 16 million set-top receivers, delivered more than 70,000 continuous hours of programming, and launched local channels in 43 markets. The company also has Spanish-language channels, offers HDTV content, and received the highest score for customer satisfaction among satellite and cable TV companies as rated by the American Customer Satisfaction Index in the first quarter.

    Of course, DirecTV and its parent, Hughes Electronics, are being bought by EchoStar. The companies' pending merger is before regulators in Washington, D.C.
