Dish distance from tree and angles

    Ok I suck at math. I am trying to determine if a tree could potentially cause issues with my dish. According to the dish augmentation reality apps I am fine. But hey!

    So the dish is mounted 4 ft high on a pole. Elevation on dish angle is 38


    The tree is about 100 ft away and I would say max 40-45 feet high

    The dish is also about 10 ft higher than the base of the tree due to the slope of the land

    I guess with a 45ft high tree. What distance and angle would block signal?

    The tree would need to be 92 feet tall to interfere.
    I did not calculate all that, I drew it using a CAD program.

    For the existing tree to block the signal the angle on the dish would have to be 17 degrees or less.

    Yeh I had used dish pointer and yeh fairly accurate. It says about 90ft tall also. Something weird was going on last week where on a clear day. Sat 103ca tp9 was going between 86 and 94 So I thought maybe it was a branch swaying Must have been something else

    Not sure what you mean by "dish augmentation reality apps", but have you tried the "Satellite AR" app? Shows on the screen where the satellites are, with good accuracy.
    I've got a lot of tree growth until line of site becomes an issue...

    That is the one i used. and had told me i had plenty of clearance over the tree.. only thing i didnt like about it was the closer i stood to the dish, it started to get weird

    Go into the satellite screen and choose "signal meters" and focus on a few of the tpns on 103ca and watch them for a minute or two. If they're varying by that much, I'm willing to bet your LNB is starting to fail. When mine went bad I could watch it and when the picture was stable 103ca would vary like this, by 10 or 20 points, when my picture started breaking up it would vary by a huge range, sometimes all the way down to zero. So I'd keep an eye on that...

    If you don't have a 5LNB, skip over this post...

    I'm guessing the 92' calculation is coming from the tangent(38°)=0.78·100'=78' plus 10' grade differential plus the 4' height of the dish above the ground.
    The wording is confusing, since you write that the dish is 10' higher (rather than 14'), it would imply the ground differential is 6', which would reduce the obstacle height to 88'
    Still ample clearance.
    The only other thing that may impact the clearance is whether you are using a 5LNB and you are located to the east.
    For example, if you were located where the Ocean City (MD) Expressway ends at the Coastal Highway, the elevation angle would be 38° for the 101°, but the 119° looking down on the west coast would be at an elevation closer to 26.5° from Ocean City, or tangent(26.5°)=0.50·100'=50' down in the range where if your tree height guesstimate is off, there may be LOS issues.
    You wouldn't think that signal loss on 119° would have any bearing on 103°ca (or anything other than 119°) readings, but somewhere I read (can't exactly remember if it was here) that signal losses on 119°, in addition to "your receiver hasn't downloaded guide info" type messages, might result in SWM transponder switching / reading fluctuations on other sats. (I have no idea if this is true).
