    Attention Dish Network subscribers:
As of midnight on January 15, 2012, you will no longer be able to view WKBN.
I guess it's all about money and not the viewer...

Write Dish Network and let them know you are willing to pay more for everyone, anytime any local channel wants whatever amount of an increase. Maybe they will pay what the network wants. If you are able to do that, please send me an email as to how you will pay me whatever increase results in my bill. Thanks, much appreciated.

If you don't mind your subscription rate going thru the roof, let Dish know of your displeasure.

If you want to pay what everyone else pays, contact WKBN since they want more money, not viewers.

We have successfully negotiated thousands of contracts with local providers over the last few years. DISH Network is attempting negotiations, however DISH has not heard back from them in more than a week since our most recent proposal. We are working hard to avoid your locals from being interrupted.

If you would like to encourage New Vision to reach a fair agreement, please contact Steve Spendlove, Executive Vice President, at 310-478-3200 or SSpendlove@newvisiontv.com.

Hey, most local stations can easily be picked up with an antenna. But since they don't get any fees this way, it's not surprising that these locals don't tell people to just pick them up ota during these disputes. It is all about the money and not the viewer.

I'll let you in on a little secret - Dish (and Direct) get many of their local channels off an OTA antenna. Assuming you're in a reasonable area for reception, there is no reason you couldn't get them that way as well.

I do have a OTA antenna on a 722k, but my thinking is that if Dish does not offer local channels I will not be able to use the EPG to record. What do you think ?

The EPG for that channel, maybe. The ability to record - no. You will just have to return to the channel/time/duration model until the EPG entry is restored.

You can record ota channels by setting manual timers. Dish usually replaces guide info with message about the channels failure to negotiate retransmission consent.

Especially WKBN! I'm in the Cleveland DMA and get WKBN 24/7 using an indoor Silver Sensor from 57 miles away. I guess I'll lose the OTA guide data if Dish pulls WKBN :(

I presume this will also affect WYFX, their sister station (I get that too on WKBN's subchannel).

BTW: WKBN's coverage area is awesome! The coverage map goes from downtown Pittsburgh to Downtown Cleveland. (one caveat: your antenna needs to clear all ground clutter to get the signal on the edges of the coverage area, however your chances of getting the signal is greater than the other stations in Youngstown whose coverage maps fall short of WKBN) I live on high ground in the Cleveland antenna farm so that is why I get WKBN so easily.

The Dish and KOIN (Portland, OR - CBS) Dispute thread also is about a New Vision station. As I noted there, the following are New Vision stations:
    • KOIN in Portland, OR - CBS affiliate.
    • WIAT in Birmingham, AL - CBS affiliate.
    • KSNW in Wichita, KS - NBC affiliate.
    • KHON in Honolulu, HI - Fox & The CW affiliate.
    • WJCL in Savannah, GA - ABC affiliate.
    • WKBN in Youngstown, OH - CBS affiliate.
    • KSNT in Topeka, KS - NBC affiliate.
    • KIMT in Mason City, IA - CBS & My Network affiliate.
Maybe a moderator could figure out a new thread title and combine these threads.

I have raised this question long ago before DiRT members were on this forum so I will raise it again and see if any of them will respond.

Why doesn't Dish provide OTA guide data for stations in a Retrans dispute? Is there some sort of legal issue? I would think it would be in Dish's best interest to provide OTA guide data to customers.

Also, Dish should provide free OTA tuners (either the one for the 722K or a DTV Pal for those who don't have receivers that support OTA) to anyone who calls because of a retrans dispute and should be able to receive the channel OTA. The costs associated with that would give Dish negotiation power while making customers happy. Every customer that they can satisfy with OTA makes Dish's sat feed of the channel less valuable. Let's face it, with the higher retrans fees, Dish is making less money on the locals.

I wish I could save $5/month by dropping locals and maybe Dish could charge $1/month so I get OTA guide data. I am lucky in that I am in a good area where I can aim my antennae and get all Baltimore & Washington channels (except WNVC & WNVT) and sometimes I get Lancaster/York PA. I would bet that if I turned my antennae toward Philadelphia, I could get many of those stations as well.

The networks are getting greedy trying to charge their affiliates more to carry their programming and the affiliates have to charge higher retrans fees. Some of them are charging way too much for something that some could receive for free. If more customers were able to use OTA and not have to pay retrans, it would be a win for Dish & the customer; the networks and affiliates would still make money on advertising.

Well, I emailed Mr Spendlove, and he emailed back saying he is working with Dish on WKBN issue, even as of this morning...here's hoping they reach an agreement.

Is WKBN still being carried this morning? I still have the guide data on my OTA feed on my 622 and the data continues out throughout the 9 days of the EPG.

I got an "error page not found" when I clicked on that link.

Perhaps they got a temporary reprieve.

Have you contacted the station to complain about their greed?
