Congrats on the Moderator status, JL!
Dish will change the mosaic's content as they feel fit more likely, as for example starting in September Dish will have "Multi Camera College Football from TBS" via this 6 screen mosaic
Which should have some of You(s), sports / football fans more likely, ...that were unhappy with current mosaic's channel selection, - somewhat happier
Read about it here: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=45529
I just brought it up on my 508. Looks good. I do like the navigation system.
It is working on my 510/508s and my 4900.
My 921 is still dead, and a new one is one the way, but it would be nice to get this feature added ASAP after OpenTV does show up (assuming they will do anything since Mpeg4 may force them to junk them all overnight anyway).
One suggestion, pick a theme and stick with it. College Sports on Saturday. News Channels during major stories like Katrina (I like the top three that the mosaic showed with CNN, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel, but what the heck is E! doing in the mix?)
Nothing yet on either of my 942s...
I noticed that over the last week the scroll at the bottom was giving instructions on how to lock out channel 100. Last night I saw a reason why. When I went to take those screen shots E! was playing the Howard Stern show. The first screenshot I took had a naked woman with not enough blur on her for DBSTalk (and really not enough for basic cable either). I waited until better pictures were on the screen.
IMHO: E! doesn't belong in the list.
Unlike the Olympic and election coverage mosaics, locking out an individual channel does not prevent the subscriber from seeing and hearing the audio via the mosaic. The prior mosaics would not display on my receiver if any one or more channel was locked out. People who have locked and blocked E! could still have it seen by their children against the parent's will on channel 100. Not good.
E* needs to pick a better channel.
But can I change the 6 channels to 6 others?
I know I don't. Its slow & clunky. Add more channels rarher than junk!
They don't have to keep them unlocked for it to work. I don't get any AT programing and when I go to dish home only bloomberg and MSNBC show up. The other channels have padlocks over them and say unauthorized or something to that effect.
You're right and I was wrong, it wasn't announced offically
It was announced and demonstrated on the last Tech Chat, about three weeks ago I believe. From Mark's transcript:
They had a poor choice of words.... "Your favorite channels" implies that the user gets to customize the feature. They should have changed to "6 of the most commonly watched channels" and they would have been fine.....
Maybe I'm alone on this, but who cares? I curse myself every time I accidentally land on the interactive feature channel or hit the button on my remote.
then don't watch it. It's actually that simple!
That DishHome button on the remote annoyed me too. I rarely used it and it would get hit when working the DVR buttons on the remote.
Now it's an instant access button to CNN and a few other channels.
But I can see your point.
Was this a verbal promise from E* executives or was it on a prepared slide that actually is worth the tape it's recorded on?
It was part of a presentation introducing the upcoming service. It is now available to most receivers that are capable of showing it.
I gather that from the thread. I was actually referring to recent discussion about how Chat presentations are merely BS sessions with supposedly no accountability and little validity.
As a dishplayer survivor, I can say that the six channel window that receiver had was very useful. Instead of navigating the ever increasing list of favorites to change channels (I cannot remember people's names so of course I don't remember channel numbers), you went to a screen where the last six channels you tuned shows up as stills. You see and hear the present channel, but your scroll buttons highlight any other channels on the screen and they become active. If it is what you wanted to watch, you press enter and it goes there. Even with 500 channels, don't you mainly watch about six favorites? Anyway, this was a very good time saver and I would welcome that ability. By having stills you avoid the transponder problem and it would save me a lot of time changing channels.
I guess that's not the point of this new interactive feature, but I will probably never go there to see six channels that I don't watch anyway. (Except for TWC) The old dishplayer feature was also good for seeing what the kids were up to while you were out! Oh well, time marches on.
I like the Mosaic concept, and only wish they would pick a theme and stick with it. CNN, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel were great choices, especially this week, Get rid of E!, Bloomburg, and Court TV, and swap in Headline News, FoxNews, and CSPAN and you're golden......
Maybe then can set up four mosaic feeds and let you choose the one that interests you most. Do it like USA Today..... News (like above), Music (MTV, VH1, VH1 Classic, FUSE, CMT, GAC), Sports (You could rotate the Extra Innings, NBA, NHL, and College for different seasons or times when they are most active... even if you don't subscribe, you would see LOCKED if you tried to access the channel), Business (CNBC, Bloomberg, etc.), and Life (E!, Style, Food Network, HGTV, DIY, etc.)
