And as I mentioned before, and I realize this is a rare occurrence, I was charged a non-return fee for a receiver still active on my account.

There are enough exceptions, variations and confusion it would be tough for anyone to state definitively what the right course of action would be.

What does DirecTV know, when did they know it, and did they know they knew it ??

Still, I've been with them since 97 and I'll never get rid of them.

I have 3 now that they have said to not return. The first 2 fully died but the last one (just got it 2 days ago) works most of the time but keeps popping up to insert an access card. They first tried a new card and no dice so I got the new receiver.

My question is can I hook it up to my network and use it as a "server" for the shows already recorded on it? I've tried and of course get searching for satellite signal error. It shows it's on the network as my third DirecTV Mediashare Renderer and Media Server. So it's connected but I can't get the other receivers to see it.

It's not a big deal but there were 3 or 4 shows we didn't get to watch. I know I can hook it up to a TV again and watch them but it would be easier to just have it in the server room and use Whole Home.

I had an HR20 that was moved to the location of the SD DVR and the HR44 was installed where the HR20 had been. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are. They can't take something that doesn't belong to them. I owned the SD DVR. That's considered theft or in this case Attempted Theft, since they weren't successful in taking my property. They already take enough of my money every month.

With no active line it will probably show Whole Home DVR is not authorized, which is why you can't see them with MRV.

or if the HR20 already got the "hit" from DirecTV to deactivate. also the access card error would stop it from sharing as well

You'll get people swearing that this or that can or cannot be done. Depends on the DVR, the software, and possibly if one is an upstanding citizen..... OK, not the last one.

I can confirm that I can still watch all the shows on my 1TB drive on the HR20 without the satellite feed hooked up. I've got a lot of catching up to do before I can get rid of it!

And let us know when you deactivated it and when it stops letting you play back if you don't get to watch everything. Then we might have an idea how long its supposed to last.

On the topic of how long, I have read elsewhere on this forum that somebody has done it for more than a year later ( of course, dont know the software version etc). One question I had is that if I deactivate the HR20, will they want the access card back by default? One post above says he was able to call and they cancelled having to return the access card.

I am trying now to startup wihout the satellite feed and the access card to see how far I get. Its not deactivated, but we just moved and I dont have the new satellite dish setup yet.

So I wasnt able to play my recorded programs without the access card. So now the question is, will they ask me to return the access card even if they dont ask to return the DVR.

It was deactivated a couple days ago when I activated the C31. I had to call to get the C31 activated because the web site wasn't accepting it. The CSR deactivated both my old DVRs without asking.

They haven't asked for mine yet, but they also haven't sent a box for the HR22 yet so we shall see.
